In American society, men are seen as brutes. However, society would not exist if not for men. Men are still seen as hairy smelly barbaric thugs, while women are portrayed as innocent and fragile. This is a product of a PC culture.

It seems as if most are ignoring biology, chastising men for acting like...men.

The mainstream media portrays men as perpetually horny, only concerned with sports and sex. The commercials are something of a Michael Bay quality, making men out to be clueless marauders. "You need to drive this truck and screw every woman out there in order to be a man" is the message. So who is to blame for this nonsense?

Men or women? Both. Men buy into the propaganda and women perpetuate it by seeking out the "perfect man" that the media has created.

The problem is not testosterone, the problem is denying who we are, trying to be something we are not. Its how we see ourselves and each other. In most commercials geared towards women, we see a thin model and men fawning over her. she only heads towards the fit man, and sometimes he is not enough for her. There is always something that is better than men (ie. chocolate, bubble bath, etc). This makes it seem that men should be considered obsolete.

In commercials geared towards men, we see a man engaged in some sport, and he might be distracted by a woman. In our society, men are expected to be tough but sensitive and women are expected to be nothing but eye candy. Is it any wonder when a decent man wants to have a relationship, the woman suspects the man of wanting only sex, because the media sells sex. Men expect women to be a size zero but with large breasts. We are living in an action movie and no one seems to be bothered by this.

There is more to a man than being rugged and the men I know want more than sex.

Nearly every day I hear or see men being chastised for acting how they are, instead of fitting into some mold created by Hollywood. If a man does not have good looks, he better have a hot car and if he does not have that, he is doomed, his bloodline comes to end due to society being artificial. Women have unrealistic expectations of men, wanting them to be more like women.

Thanks to the media for planting this idea that men are evil for having a libido and wanting to live life their way. Most men I know don;t give a shit that they do not look like Brad Pitt. They do not shave their chest or live the life of James Bond.

We now live in a society that punishes men for not acting/thinking in a feminine way.

Also important to note: men are four times likely to complete suicide than women.

(source: afsp.org). Why is this? It could be attributed to the pressure society places on men.  In most divorce cases, the court rewards the female, meaning the house and kids go towards the ex-wife. The justice system is very much anti-male, seeing as how men are convicted of crimes 3x as often as women.

Scott this is very good, I don't know how I missed it when you first posted it.  You're absolutely right, I hold the media largely responsible for defining what it means to be a man or woman.  It was they who suddenly decided that men should shave their body hair, have washboard abs, women should have hairless genitalia, and other things beyond physical appearance as you correctly point out.  We're put in the position of having--or wanting--to change ourselves to conform to some notion of masculinity that is unrealistic and just plain false.  Of course this carries over into the criminal justice system, despite what they might say they take their cues from the popular culture.  People just  need to be who they are and not apologize for it.

thanks guys. It seems the only way to attract women these days is to beef up, get tats, and claim you went to jail (just make up a story like a bar fight and you busted a guys nose).

Scott.  You've outdone yourself on this post.  Quite good.

Yeah, I can't stand the media's portrayal of men today.  I like my hairy chest, I want more then sex, and my car is practical.  Nothing hot about it.
