This was a concept that I have been thinking about for quite some time. I would have preferred to do it in a video/blue screen format on YouTube to make it appear as if I were actually addressing my fellow United States citizens.
The concept is simple. What would I say to the American people and Congress if I were made president? It is a moot point because, it will never happen but, seriously, if I were put into that position, what would I do? How would I endeavor to inspire the peoples of this great nation and to move toward a better, and more stable society?
This will be the first of many of these reflections. I will allow comments to these posts but, that it be kept in mind that these are meant to be thought provoking, not necessarily to act as a springboard for political debates.
Inauguration Speech - January 2017
My Fellow Americans,
I first would like to thank all of you for affording me the opportunity to act as the leader of this great country. I will, indeed, do my best to uphold our Constitution and to act, not solely on my own ideals and interests, but, in the best interests for our great nation and you, the citizens of that nation.
As President, I here and now offer up all of the powers associated with my position to the American peoples who elected me. It is you who will truly decide the direction in which this nation journeys, I am solely the driver and occasionally the navigator on that path.
I have but one request of you, My Fellow Americans, Get Involved. For too long, the people of this country have paid close attention to whom they elect, and then, once the person is in office, assume that they are acting on the best interests of their State, Country and Constituents. This assumption has caused many problems, as Congress has run autonomously without the oversight of the persons being governed for many decades.
To quote James Madison from the 51st of the Federalist Papers in 1788, "If men were angels, no government would be necessary. If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on government would be necessary."
For too long, we have assumed that our elected officials are angels and that their voices have always truly been in the best interests of the peoples of our Nation. Do not make this assumption, neither of me, nor of my constituents. While I am not saying that our wills are set against the peoples we serve, there are many throughout history for which this holds true. Therefore, hold us accountable and keep us on the right path, for Congress cannot hold itself accountable to its people, the people alone must do this.
Every bill that is proposed is posted online within hours of being introduced, every UN treaty is on display and the majority of investments corporations make to our Congressmen are public. There is no reason why the American people shouldn't pay attention to these things. How is it that the citizens of this country can presume to know their Government is doing a good job if they don't even look at the work that is being done by their elected officials? How is it that the people can claim the government is not acting in their best interests, and yet, make no effort to work with their elected officials to correct these things?
So to you, my fellow Americans, I say this, pay attention. Scrutinize my work and the work of my peers. Make sure we are working for you and not for any ideology, corporate interest or outspoken minority. Hold us accountable.
It is you the people of this country that make it great. It is by the will of the people that it should be governed. It is by the will of the people that this country will become even greater.
In aligning myself with these ideals, I hereby renounce my powers to write and execute executive orders and also renounce my powers to use signing statements to lessen or to subvert the will of the people through their congressional representatives. I also rescind any and all executive orders currently enacted through my predecessors in this office. I ask that Congress draft a bill cementing said forfeitures for myself and to those who will hold this office in the future.
This country belongs to its citizens. I hereby encourage and challenge all of the peoples of this country to help in determining its future. I hereby present to all of you that it is your right and duty as a citizen to help ensure the freedom and well-being of not only this generation, but of those to come. This is your chance, this is your future, this is your presidency.
Let us together grab the torch of freedom and run with it throughout this presidency. Let us never let it be dampened and dimmed by economic or social conditions. Let us instead endeavor to correct these things as one people and work to bring this great country into an age that will be the envy of all other free nations. Let us work together to make this a more perfect union, and to ensure lasting peace and freedom for generations to come.
God bless all of you and God bless America!
