30 Days to a Better Man; Day 30 - Get a Straight Razor Shave

Barbershops are scarce in my neck of the woods; very scarce.  The closest that I have come to a straight razor shave at a barbershop was a lady that used to shave my neck with a straight razor.  Since then, however, I have fallen into the whole "21st century young man" thing and started going to a Unisex salon for my haircuts.

As a fair compromise, I've decided to give myself a straight razor shave.  Even before I discovered AoM, I had been interested in the idea of shaving with a straight razor - if it worked for my grandfathers, it can work for me.  Sadly, I struggled to find a decent straight razor and I ended up buying a cheap one at the Oriental Plaza (you can find almost anything there, lots of cheap imports).  I learned the hard way that shaving with a straight razor ain't easy - to me, it was a bit like playing Russian Roulette with 5 bullets in a six-shooter. I didn't last very long before I went back to my Gillette Mach 3.  After discovering AoM, I got myself a safety razor with disposable blades, which I now use.

For today's challenge, I broke out the straight razor again.  The blade is dull, and I don't know where to find a replacement (the place where I bought the razor didn't sell extra blades).  I didn't cut my face off, but I think that I'll stick to my safety razor until I get a decent straight razor.

P.S.  While wandering through a shopping mall over the weekend, I came across a straight razor imported from Germany.  The price tag, however, was on the hefty side - a full R1500.  That can buy you groceries for a month, a car payment, 15 rounds on the spectacular Brits golf course, or eleven and a half copies of the AoM book.

Hi everyone,

If you enjoyed doing the 30 day challenge way back when and wish that you could get that same motivation again, I've started a group that might help. It's just been created and has yet to pick up, so I need as many people as I can to get it off the ground.

Please check it out here: http://community.artofmanliness.com/group/manly-solidarity

I look forward to seeing some of you gents in the group and hope that we can all grow manlier together.

There are a lot of good shaving creams and soaps but I have found the rather inexpensive Proraso Green to be among the best. It out performs several of my more expensive shaving soaps. Taylor of Old Bond Street creams, especially "Rose," are really exquisite, albeit a little more money. However, all of the good creams and soaps last a long time.

DLB, thank you for the links.  I scanned through them, and there are a couple of very nice razors on those sites.

TsueDesu, surprisingly enough I found my safety razor at Pick n Pay.  It's a cheap Lion brand one, but I prefer it to my Gillette Mach 3 - it just feels more manly.  The only thing that I would like to add to it is proper shaving cream, instead of the stuff that comes in an aerosol can.

Awesome! My dad had one, not sure what happened to it. I dont like shaving of any kind though lol I'll stick to my mach 3 until I have to buy those obnoxious 22 blade things :P

In the meanwhile, if you have a safety raiser, try Clicks.. or better SHOPRITE :P If you ever in a dodge neighbourhood, or Joburg CBD, you can find them at the chemist or sparzas :P

Hi Riaan,

I wish you luck on your straight razor shave. I started four months ago and now am converted.

You may be able to find a good used razor from any of the following sites. You will need to see how expensive the shipping would be. I bought a razor from Australia and had it mailed to the USA. Costs were high but not unreasonable.

Here are some sites:
http://www.whippeddog.com/
http://bobsrazors.com/
http://www.gemstarcustoms.com/
http://therestoredrazor.com/
http://badgerandblade.com/
http://straightrazorplace.com/content/

The first four offer razors at reasonable prices and come shave ready.
The last two have members who sell razors and bargains are often available.

Three good new razor dealers I have used include:
http://www.straightrazordesigns.com/
http://www.classicshaving.com/
http://www.vintagebladesllc.com/

Even if you decide not to buy, these are great sites.

Good Luck!

Thanks for pointing that out Jim.  I came across the German razor over the weekend.

5 fascinating reasons cockroaches will outlive us all

Ah, cockroaches. The scummy, skittering, pesky little pests that somehow manage to vanish whenever you flick on the bathroom light. Like Mother Nature's little Batmans. Part of what makes them so hard to control is their resiliency, which is something of a biological marvel. Here are five reasons the humble roach will outlive us all:1. They can adapt at a scary-fast rateIn the mid-1980s, exterminators began mixing sugary roach-bait with slow-acting poisons intended to spread and wipe out entire…See More
