I have written about my discovery of the iron in an earlier blog; the pursuit of strength both inside and out.
But the visual results I did not mention, mostly because it smacks of narcissism; and I see that attitude reflected here among the other members who exercise. Wanting bigger muscles in and of themselves is to be looked down upon; real men don’t care so much how they look; it’s strength and endurance that matters.
I write now about being bigger, because, well, I’ve…Continue

Music has been a big part of my life since I can remember. Several of my aunts and uncles can play an instrument or sing; and a few are music/vocal teachers. My mom and brother play the piano very well. I can play “Fur Elise” by Beethoven in my head because I heard my brother play it so much. As for playing it myself, that doesn’t go very well. I know very elementary piano and a few guitar chords, but I don’t play well at all. I love…Continue

So it's silly time of the year again and over the weekend I decided to go ahead and commit to partaking in a sprint triathlon in May 2013.
Its silly because I dont have a bike yet and havent run a whole lot due to a painful knee and a twisted ankle.
I planned on writing a post every week or month to help keep me honest with the training
Today was day 1of a 22week journey, Started with a 20 minute run and a 200yard…Continue

As part of my new awareness of being a man, I've long lamented my isolation; no male friends.
I've had them come and go in my life, rare as hen's teeth; those few I felt I could open up to or those who felt I was worth climbing barriers I've set up to get to know me.
Today one of the very best of them has come back into my life.
The month I turned 40 coincided with the opening of a gym in our town center. It was small, mostly station equipment and all brand-spanking new.…Continue
The first time I met him, Ted wore disheveled biking clothes and his eyes were bloodshot from laser surgery a few weeks before. He sat hunched over his coffee cup, eyes averted, arms occasionally crossed over his chest. He seemed absent somehow.
Soon off the top of our conversation, he talked about his failed…Continue

Many years ago, the comedian Flip Wilson had a weekly variety show. One of the character's he played was always getting in trouble and when c aught the tag line was "The Devil made me do it."
Today, in my work, a I see so many men blaming their actions on others. A guy will cuss out a woman in writing after she has sent a stupid text, and say. "I know it was wrong, but she really knows how to push my buttons." A man going through a custody case will start smoking dope, and…Continue

I decided to write a bit about my experience of the 9/11 terrorist attacks- mostly because I never have. A few friends and family have heard all or most of the story over the years, but I have never written thoroughly about it. No particular reason for it. This year I wanted to share.
I don't know anyone personally who was killed in the attacks. But I know people who did lose family and/or friend. I was working at Barnes & Noble…
