#2, sonogram

“No abnormalities detected.” WOOOOOHOOOOO!!!!! And regarding the other question…

#2

It’s an open secret, so let’s make it not secret at all:  baby #2 is on the way. We had no idea it would happen so quickly! Unhappy images We were getting worried during the last month and the start of this one.  We were in the “you should feel the baby kick” period, getting toward the end [...]

Tubes in the ears

Marisa took Liam to the EENT today, and this is the word:  “Bilateral myringotomy with tube placement.”  Or as they say, tubes in the ears. It’s a tube through the eardrum (I hate the sound of that, but they say it will seal later — 95% likely)  into the middle ear.  It doesn’t [...]

He failed the hearing test

When he was a newborn, he failed in one ear repeatedly, then passed.  I thought it was the test.  It seems very finicky.  Can’t do it now; he’s snoring.  (Yes, he’s supposed to be asleep when they do it.  They measured brain activity.)  He’s breathing rough.  Something else. This time, he failed, and they also did [...]

Trading off

About three weeks ago, Liam had a fever.  Congestion would wake him up.  We weren’t worried, but it’s always sad to have a sick baby. Cresting one week later was Marisa’s version of the same thing.  She was really miserable. I was Mr. Mom, or it would’ve been hell for her. And in one more week I [...]

OK. So you could call at about the same time, and it wouldn't feel like prying. (And of course "Whatcha doooin?" has another problem besides prying -- it puts all the work on her!) ...and you can talk to her not several times a day (Lord, that wo...

Oh, yes, you definitely need to keep romance alive. Fortunately, it's fun! I don't know how to do it long distance, though. A surprise card now and then, with a pressed flower in it? You could try *different* medai for communicating. I didn't un...

I do this sort of exploration -- and resolution of the results -- in the ManKind Project. (See the MKP Men group for more about how it's helpful.) It's said, and I believe it: you can't heal alone. I'll have a chance to do this myself Tuesday nig...

Compassion is called for. Listen to what John M is saying: this is hard, very hard; he wonders if he needs to just lock himself away from the world so he can stop being a burden; he'd like to have his fill of things you can do alone with a pretty ...

It'll be a little weird if you start wearing your father's wedding ring before you're married. It *is* a wedding ring, and undoubtedly looks like one. Mixing old and new sounds nice. My wedding ring has inscribed in it MY HEART 2008. What could ...

Don't be too sure you can't afford ManKind Project: our community (DC), at least, has *never* turned anyone away for lack of money.

I don't believe that recurring, nagging anger that must be controlled is natural and innate. I think it's cause by, well, something you're angry about, and have been for a very long time. It doesn't need to be something that is currently a threat....

We'll be camping this year. I am hoping for good weather because my wife doesn't like having a tent, and says if it rains, it rains. We'll be out at 5 hunting turkey. Since this is baby boy's first Thanksgiving after being able to pick up his own ...

How to split firewood

I’ll admit it: for me, splitting wood has nothing do with lowering the heating bill. I like that satisfying thunk! and the feeling of power, seeing that big obstinate piece of wood doing what I want. The look of the fire in the evening is nice, too, especially when you didn't have to buy the wood at the supermarket.

Here's how to make it happen.

What you need

An ax. A maul is fine, but you don't need it, unless you're entering a wood-splitting competition.

Seasoned wood split… Continue

Even in politics, think it through

So here's my attempt at a non-political, political post.

A responsible man (or woman) should think through the consequences of a political stance, before promoting it.
Seems obvious, doesn't it? You wouldn't decide on home renovation, or buying a car, or marrying, without thinking of the consequences. Why do it for politics?

Our political views are a sort of entertainment. (They may also be a token of membership to a group that you like.) But they do matter. If enough people agree with yo… Continue

How to built sturdy basement shelves

At Brett's suggestion, I'm writing this up: how to make cheap, sturdy basement shelves you can be sure won't fall over. I am not an expert; don't sue me if yours do. But I'm not worried about mine. (I did take the precaution of putting very heavy stuff on the bottom shelf. Nothing will save a top-heavy structure from falling over -- nothing but an L-bracket, anyway, and I don'… Continue

My birthday presents

I celebrated a birthday this month.

When I did, and my wife was going with me to Red Lobster, I thought about how my life has become.

It's ordinary. I have a wife and a baby boy. There's little drama in it. We don't fight like cats and dogs (or any other way, for that matter.) My concerns these days are home maintenance, taking care of baby boy and romancing wife, a few other projects.

I like "ordinary."

I once thought that to stand out of the crowd, you had to be different, and it was unque… Continue

Let's mix it up, agewise

When I was a teenager, there were definitely times I didn't want older heads around. The reason was obvious. I didn't want them telling me what to do, and they had a habit of doing that. (And sometimes I expected it. But sometimes I wanted to be free.)

So teens hang out together.

When I was a young man feeling like a teenager, it was much the same. I didn't realize yet, deep down, that they could no longer tell me what to do unless I let them.

And there's also an issue of common interest. I h… Continue

Yes. It's definitely entrepreneurship. I guess I've always had it my blood, but I spent most of my life trying to go after a stable career with pension mainly because I felt it was what I *should* have been doing. It feels good to being doing something I actually enjoy doing.

My job right now is writing and running the site believe it or not. We're not going to be the next Rockefellers, but we can pay the bills, afford health insurance, and enjoy a date night once a week eating pizza.

It's funny how life works out sometimes. I never thought I would be writing for a living three years ago.

Thanks for the welcome. The statue is of a ship captain. The rest of the statues has him standing on a pier with what appears to be a small child clinging to him, I guess to weather the storm.
