Assuming you are referring to the passage I quoted, you are correct in saying that it wasn't a prophesy; It was a caveat to his followers to not expect discipleship in Christ to solve all of their problems in this life but rather to increase them....
I agree, there's no "kind" way to do this. I was kind of hoping after the "anonymous note made from clipped out letters from a magazine" suggestion it would be more obvious that the confrontation suggestions were tongue in cheek.
