New House. Thinking of gardening.

My wife and I just bought a new house, and the previous owners had a little garden, which I'm thinking of rehabbing and starting back up. It's in pretty bad shape currently. Here's my question(s): how easy is it to get started with gardening? My wife and I have three small children (aged three and under); would that prove too difficult?
