How's your weather at the moment?

Light snow in Cincinnati, about 20 degrees with a brisk wind and an inch or so of snow on the ground. We're usually expecting this sort of cold, blustery weather in February.

Anyone living in Cincinnati should really check out Tazza Mia (www.tazzamia.com). I just tried their Nutty Irishman (a latte-type drink with hazelnut and Irish cream) and their Medium House Blend, and I have never had better coffee in my life! Serio…

You should check out Nina Totenberg's reports at NPR.org. She's been very clear at clearing up the history, the law, and what the rulings say and don't say. The shocking thing about this was that the case, as originally heard, was an extremely narr…

Hm. I hadn't noticed this. The Citizens United ruling does NOT strike down a limitation of campaign funding by corporations. I knew that Citizens United had been forbidden by the government not to fund a campaign, but to engage in political speech;…

Nice little comic Herb! Having myself found the girl of my dreams on the internet, I would say yes. We have been together for nearly a year (and good friends for nearly two), and I just went to visit her on the weekend of the 16th. (She lives in St…

If the people *want* to amend the constitution -- something like, "Congress shall make no law ... abridging the freedom of speech, or freedom of the press, for individuals, but it's to censor political speech for groups," we have a mechanism to do i…

The next time somebody complains about activist judges, I get to point out that it cuts both ways. Conceptually, this might be a good idea (I doubt it). But in practice, it will be thoroughly destructive to the electoral process. The voice of the…

Great explanation, Will. I read an excellent opinion on the decision from Matt Welch, Editor in Chief of Reason Magazine. http://www.cnn.com/2010/OPINION/01/21/welch.free.expression.campaign/index.html

"Congress shall make no law ... abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press." If this does not apply to "corporations" like the Sierra Club, the ACLU, Citizens United, or any other citizens' group, it surely wouldn't apply to actual for-profit…

I agree with Herb Munson. The decision from SCOTUS was a reaffirmation of the 1st Amendment. Corporations are merely collective organizations of individuals. In a collective setting, are individuals not also entitled to the same Constitutional prot…

So do you think it would matter if it was a company headquartered in Moscow, wishing to air political messages?

I said it in another thread, but it's more relevant here: the "corporation" that was being prosecuted for its political involvement was not a for-profit corporation, but a nonprofit political organization. This wasn't about a multinational corporati…

Please forgive for the rather short and hastened reply, but I think that an assumption is made by the champions of this ruling: Money is (legally) speech and greater amounts of money = greater amounts of speech. I don't believe this assumptions ar…

That is a good way to look at it. A perspective I had not considered. I am not sure I entirely agree, but that's another matter. :) Thanks for the link.

Quote
"Truth has nothing to hide from an honest investigation." - Bro. Wally Miller

"People talk of the sacrifice I have made in spending so much of my life in Africa. Can that be called a sacrifice which is simply paid back as a small part of a great debt owing to our God, which we can never repay? Is that a sacrifice which brings its own blest reward in healthful activity, the consciousness of doing good, peace of mind, and a bright hope of a glorious destiny hereafter? Away with the word in such a view and with such a thought! It is emphatically no sacrifice. Say rather it is a privilege. Anxiety, sickness, suffering, or danger now and then with a foregoing of the common conveniences and charities of this life, may make us pause and cause the spirit to waver and the soul to sink; but let this only be for a moment. All these are nothing when compared with the glory which shall be revealed in and for us. I never made a sacrifice." - Dr. David Livingstone
