I am Roma!

Posted on October 20, 2012 at 6:02pm 0 Comments

I am Roma. My people are most commonly called “Gypsy” because they were believed to have emerged out of Egypt. My paternal grandmother was Sinti Romani and my paternal grandfather was Finnish Kale Roma, which makes my father full-blood Romani. My mother, however, was Scottish Traveller (I believe she came from Domari family in Scotland, around Edinburgh) and because of my parents’ marriage, we were largely outside of…

Never Forget. Never Again.

Friends, tonight begins the two day rememberance of the Porrajmos, the Romani Holocaust. It was on this day that eight thousand Romani men, women and children perished in the gas chambers at Auschwitz. Tonight we burn candles for those we lost. We burn our candles for forty eight hours to remember the more than 500,000 Romani who died during the Porrajmos.

Tomorrow, at twelve noon, we have a moment of silence.

Te aves baxtalo! Personally, I do not have a problem with the use of the word gypsy - as with anything, it is how it is used, that is important. I do try to limit my use of it, it is not how we ever referred to ourselves, and I know some people do view it as a slur, as you say. Usually I introduce myself as roma, and then follow up with gypsy when I inevitably have to explain what roma is. So I use it educationally... Everyone has their own feelings on it though.

New Poems

A Poem by some one that I knowTake nothing lightlyBy Bjorn FaknamTake nothing lightly. No vain promise give. Hold your honor tightly, In the one life we live.Do not throw trust away, Whether in you or from you. Live up to it today, In everything you do.Look with respect. Follow honor to the letter. Use the courtesy you expect. Nay, treat them better. No matter what gifts you were given, You are never above yourself. By whatever cause you are driven, Put yourself on the back shelf. Those around…See More
