I don't know how many of you guys heard about this in the news today, but today 4 women filed a suit against the Department of Defense over the rules that exclude women in combat. My college class…Continue

"I say let them fight but they have to be as physically fit as their male counterparts. I know in many fields (I am unsure of american military standards) such as the Canadian Forces the requirements for females are far less then a male.…"

"As Shane pointed out, you have the shooters (infantry) and everyone else is there to ensure that the shooters have what they need to do their job effectively. Sometimes that means going out with them, sometimes it doesn't. With that said, just…"

"This is a common argument for same sex education. My recollection, however, is that the data (by and large) doesn't bear this out. "

Rick Shelton replied to Julian Ross's discussion Women in Combat?
"Liam: Different cultures may get different results. Shane: Not sure if that would be a good test case either as most non-Combat Arms units don't train for combat as their primary operation.  It is closer, however and may provide some…"

"Unfortunately body-weight standards don't equal getting to the fight with all your gear.  Combat units that I've been in required unit members to carry everything they'd need for the mission.  That means that the guy…"

Rick Shelton replied to Julian Ross's discussion Women in Combat?
"Mike, No women and men aren't the same, but the requirements of combat for both are the same.  Everybody will have to hump their 135lb ruck into the bush for extended marches, each will have to carry their own weapon, ammo, water, rations,…"

Mike M. replied to Julian Ross's discussion Women in Combat?
"No.  I'm sure there are plenty of women who can do 40 pushups.  I'm saying it's not an apples to apples comparison.  A woman who can do 40 pushups is probably stronger and more athletic than a man who can do the same."

"And maybe they wouldn't have to make men take those assignments if they let women. This is the flip side to what I write above about why someone would want those assignments."

What would be considered physically weak?

I'm obviously not a gym rat and I'm very ignorant about fitness, but I am trying to improve my health and overall body composition. To skip the point, I'm not certain on how to have a decent workout and what defines someone as physically strong. Though I'm not entirely sure of what I can do (or what my max is), the last amount of weight I've squatted was 205 lbs. which doesn't seem to be a lot since I believe most people can squat twice their weight (I weight 234 lbs. or so). I did 10 reps of…See More
