What goes with a brown checkered jacket?

The jacket is dark brown with barely visible light greenish-blue checks.Would a plain-white shirt go with it? What about deep oxford blue? What about a white shirt with thin widely strapped black…Continue

Hi, I'm looking to buy a shirt which would go with a charcoal gray suit. So far I've an oxford blue shirt (which, I think, goes with it, doesn't it?). Would the following shirt be considered formal…Continue

How to know if the tailor's good?

Started this discussion. Last reply by Brett McKay May 9, 2013. 6 Replies

How can I know if the tailor's good? For example, I'd like to get a tailored suit, how do I know that he'll do a good job tailoring it? Even sewing it "properly?" How can I know that? They don't have…Continue

I'm a really slim guy, I look young and my wrists are slimmer than anybody's I've met. Though, I've a good bone structure elsewhere - shoulders. So far I think this one may be an alright choice for my…Continue

"Look to nature when combining colors.  God did a great job with color palettes.   Brown reminds me of bark, like a tree.  So, think colors you would find on a tree...green is obvious, but also blue, pink, yellow, lavender,…"

"I'd probably try to emphasize the greenish-blue in the jacket and choose a very pale green or blue button-down shirt with no stripes.  It sounds like all your surrounding components are neutral, so most colors would work as long as…"

The jacket is dark brown with barely visible light greenish-blue checks.Would a plain-white shirt go with it? What about deep oxford blue? What about a white shirt with thin widely strapped black straps? What about a light blue stripe shirt? Stripes though, probably don't go with checks, do they?Would a white plain (think mad men, Don Draper) pocket square go with it? If not - what would? Since it's a sports jacket, I think no tie should be worn with it, and the top shirt button unbuttoned.I'd…See More

"All are fine except for the first. It has a sort of 'linen' look that does not go well with a suit..... Be careful with the looser weaves (2nd and 3d from below), as they probably won't last quite as long. "

Need a dress shirt advice

Hi, I'm looking to buy a shirt which would go with a charcoal gray suit. So far I've an oxford blue shirt (which, I think, goes with it, doesn't it?). Would the following shirt be considered formal enough (more formal than business casual, but not necessarily the highest level of formality) and would it fit with my charcoal grey suit? (I know that it's from moderntailor, but I'm not a guy posting on their behalf, there's no decent local store is all)…See More

"In that case, it would be more difficult to ascertain but then I suppose they would have the suits made centrally, so it would be more likely to have reviews online. Canvas is what's inside of a high quality suit jacket. It helps it keep its…"

John Baka replied to John Baka's discussion How to know if the tailor's good?
"What if it's a company, not a single tailor guy? What does it mean, a canvassed jacket? Well, it comes to the same price to tailor it or to buy a nice one at the store, at least here."

Ian M replied to John Baka's discussion How to know if the tailor's good?
"I guess you might be able to find reviews online. Another thing you can do is go in there and talk to the tailor, find out where he trained, his particular style etc., maybe ask a few other questions.  A good question would be to ask about…"

Salary on Politicians?

One can state that, for offices of government, that the Salary be no more than the poverty line. After all, politicians are public servants, not a job for money. Disagree, agree?I personally can see a slew of questions come up. Why, then, have the military exempt? Cut the pay for them all - but they are also the ones who actually protect the land. But then it can double back - what then do they do that politicians do not. Or, even, have a Pay grade system for the Politicians - save the fact…See More
