While I would agree with your opinions on local, national, and cable US news, it is not the same everywhere else. I watch the BBC evening news (30 of national and international news + 30 minutes of local news ... all without a single commercial) a...

I once heard from a person that I respect that "trying to find out what's going on in the world by watching the daily news is like trying to tell the time by watching the second hand on a clock." I think that's true. There's this whole idea that y...

I killed my TV about 9 years ago, and saved a lot of time by doing it! And I'd already killed TV news. They're too interested in *stopping* news stories, in deceiving their viewers, and I'm not so proud as to think it would never work on me. Bett...

I think some video games may be benificial. Some of the cognitive skills noted in a few of the replies were reflected in increased dexterity and success of surgeons performing operations as reported in 'New Scientist' and British Medical Journal. ...

I don't really watch the news either. I read more online papers on order to keep informed. I agree with a point you made, I perceive more sensationalism in the media - banner headlines, theme songs, and slick, fancy graphics for large news stories...

Hi Thad, I think you hit the nail on the head. Finding things you really love, that you have a passion to develop and build over time, such as a relationship, a specific career etc. Its wierd because in a way you are listening for hunches about w...

Thanks on the heads up on how to make a suit sit well on the body. I used to work in a suit shop whilst at Uni (almost 8 years ago...) and its amazing how a well tailored suit can really define the body shape of the wearer. I'm really into waistco...

You're spot on Joseph, It all about passion and attitude to situations and in general. Challenge as well; life would be pretty darn boring without this.

Profile Information

Interests
Currently work in the UK National Health Service full time whilst burning the midnight oil reading for a part time Masters in Disaster Management. Currently I am with the National Poisons Information Service, but am looking for a strategic role in Public Health Emergency Response. All my other interests have to lay low until my postgrad is finished with. Would love to do International Disasters Response (i.e. UNDAC or ICRC) in the future and I working my ass off to realise this goal. It never stops.

Besides working in health protection, I write when time affords. I am predominantly a poet, but have begun a short foray into prose (the latter is too difficult). I can play the piano and funnily enough the tin whistle (have a Clarkes and a Shaw in my draw). I regularly keep a journal (an A6 Moleskine); it helps clarify thought and then solidify it by writing.

Other than that just ticking through the motions.
Books
Loads, but don't have the time to type them.
Movies
Shawshank Redemption, American History X, Usual Suspects, Field of Dreams, City of God, Cinema Paradiso amongst others.
Quote
"When passion drives that goal: work hard, work incredibly hard...consistently." - One of my own reminders.

"Life is an adventure or nothing."- Helen Keller.

My other favourite is by super eviL super man, David Goggins:

"Show no weakness."

"When I feel uncomfortable, I find out what I am about. To see if there are limits. Limits to the human soul."

Well said frogman.

The TV: a non watching adventure.

I haven’t watched the news in a month. Come to think of it I have not watched a much TV in general; averaging about an hour a day maximum. The television had stopped being an ominous fixture in my daily life since I was 18. I found that when I started my first degree in the rough suburbs of Bradford, that our student halls had no televisions included in the rent. It just became a habit of weaning myself from soap operas, news and reality shows amongst other things.

I don’t know why, but bad new… Continue

The wonder that is Moleskine!

Such a magical book brought and sterile. It’s almost sacrilege to write in it, even worse to write a diary entry riddled with typos. Maybe I just buy into the idea that Chatwin used to purchase 100 of these from a bookshop in a street in Paris called Rue de l’Ancienne Comédie- amazing advertising on the part of Modo e’ Modo. Reading Gleick’s autobiography of Newton where this curious Professor of physics with his spidery writing would lace the pages. It is even said that he would write sideways… Continue

When we were kids.

I was a child once, living on the second
floor with fast-food smells from the shop
below. In between chanting the seven times
table saying seven sevens are forty-nine

I would run up Mannerwell Drive, up the
steep incline and would re-enact those old
wars against dragons and ghosts with
our cardboard cut-out proton packs.

Joshua would run with arms outstretched
Dirtying the floors, his mum who only
Mopped it ten minutes ago. But she knew
we were shot to a distant planet.

Those years I look upo… Continue

A manly way to deal with setbacks.

I applied for a dream job at the Strategic Health Authority in Newcastle. After a lengthy interview it transpired that although my academic credentials were sound and that I had a good theoretical basis in emergency planning, however I lacked operational experience. Predictably I did not get the job, but was invited to see the senior strategic planner in this organisation.

It was one of those paradoxes. How can I get experience, if I am not accepted into a position that encourages routine expos… Continue

Untitled (until I think of a title anyway)

Sitting there by the sea when darker clouds unfurl,
Chilled surf chisels the rock below; smashing them into
shards. Beachy Head sullen by encroaching salt wash,
unrecognisable by scars bared and lines etched.

Summits peaking the water, lining in formation
to face the peaks and troughs. They will smile though
prostrating to a wide vista; a view that just encircles.
Clouds coalescing spreading hazy ambience…

Through my eyes I could clearly see as we stood there.
The sun fading to aerate the sky… Continue

I've been a history nut for most of my life. My main interest is aviation history (I build model airplanes as a hobby; I find it relaxing [mostly]) and military history in particular. I have a few friends who were in and they have some fascinating stories. I have a large collection of military history books.
