The Beacon is Lit.

Posted on December 8, 2010 at 1:32am 0 Comments

It's Pearl Harbor Day.

On the evening of December 7, 1941, the aircraft navigation beacon on top of Mt. Diablo, east of San Francisco, CA was not lit for the first time since 1928.

The rotating beacon has a visual range of some 200 miles, well within the flight range of 1941 carrier based bombers, and it was feared that Japanese would use the beacon to bomb the San Francisco area.

The beacon was not relit until December 7, 1964.

It will be lit…

Culmination Day.

Almost unbelievable! Our daughter just "culminated" from elementary school today. Good grief, it seems like only a couple of weeks ago she was a "Campbell's Soup Kid" look-alike of a toddler. Now, she's on the verge of becoming a young lady. Absolutely amazing how quickly time flew by.

One minor note. I laughed at the contrast between her Culmination Ceremony, with speeches, awards, certificates and cake and my successful departure from elementary school, which was on the…

Sex Symbols

From the Grammarphobia blog.Q: In a recent radio appearance, you said the idea that “he” can refer to any human being – man or woman – was introduced in the 18th century by a female grammarian. I think you’re wrong. The concept of male as universal has been around much longer.A: If by “male as universal,” you mean using male pronouns (“he,” “him,” and “his”) for women as well as men, the idea did indeed begin in the 18th century. Before then – for two centuries, in fact – it was considered…See More

The death of neck ties?

I heard that according to researches that the neck tie is expected to become obsolete in the next few decades. Because more and more men are dressing more casually these days thanks to Facebook and google where the CEO shows up in jeans and a hoodie. So is the neck tie really becoming obsolete or are men just not caring about his personal appearance? Please feel free to give your taken on this.See More
