What I learned on my trip...

Posted on February 22, 2010 at 3:06pm 0 Comments

Sometimes stereotypes are dead wrong.

If you make an effort to speak the language, most locals are nice. Yes, even the French. They were great!

Sometimes, even if you speak the language, the locals can be insufferable. I'm looking at you, London.

And, of course, I'm not capable of blogging every day when I travel. Too much else to do!

Sometimes you get lucky...

The hotel is near the lake, though my window looks the other way.

But I can see the old church from it, and can almost look down into the plaza.

There is a festival going now with bands and costumes. We picked a good time to be here. It's all in the plaza.

Which means I can forget sleep, because they will be going all night, I've been told.

Nothing left for it except to join them...

Switzerland Day 1

Posted on February 6, 2010 at 7:12am 0 Comments

Up at 6, hit the road. Crossed three countries, have arrived in Zurich. Great scenery along the way, will share pics later. Weather is a bit brisk (@4 C) but not bad. OFf to scavenge for food...

Epinal Day 3

Posted on February 5, 2010 at 4:26pm 0 Comments

Close to being recovered from jet lag, though not quite there yet.

I've learned quite a bit in the last few days. I've picked up a lot of French for the short time. I've gotten enough that I could get by at dinner in a restaurant where no one spoke English and no English menu was available. Went with paella, darn tasty.

The team here has been very nice to work with. Many of the stereotypes of the French could not be more wrong. I'm sure there are some who live them to fullest,… Continue

Hi Dwayne,

Thanks for the kind invite. I'll definitely check out the book club. I'm currently reading Steinbeck's "Travels With Charley" and will start "East Of Eden" next week.

After that, I'm definitely looking for some good reads.

Thanks for the group invite. I'm writing a book that requires a lot of research so I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to participate for a long time :/ I bookmarked it for future reference, though!

Mr Lay,

Thanks for your invitation to the BookOfTheMonth group. I'm not
sure I could create the time, will keep it in mind though. I'm
ogling also at the SciFi group, may have a look at it (as time
permits).

Before considering chatting about (fiction) books, I need to
connect on an intellectual level. So I want first to look and see
if I can tease out a discussion (i.e. link minds) on your
"Philosophers" group (which I was very pleased to find).

I have seen the (fiction and nonfiction) book lists on
ArtOfManliness.com, had already distilled out of it quite a
sizeable shopping list ...

Are you a full-time discussion group manager at ArtOfManliness.com ?

PS: Today, when I tried first to register at your "Philosophers"
group to post a new topic, a popup appeared asking me to type in a
message to you -- however later it seemed to me somehow that this
may have been superfluous. Not sure. (I've been on a lot of
email-based discussion lists, but this is one my first web-based
fora.) If it was superfluous, then my apologies for my awkwardness
and for the confusion.

With best Regards,

Menno Rubingh

Hike on Saturday

Relatively new here; thought I'd say hello

Hello men,I'm not new to Art of Manliness, but I am new to the community. I thought I'd take the time to introduce myself. I'm almost 30, married for just over a year, and we have our first child on the way. I'm Mormon. I worked for five years sewing men's clothing, which is perfectly fine as a manly career in my opinion, but it was a dead-end job ultimately, so I quit and became an electrician. I'm still in my first year as an apprentice, but I'm very happy doing it. Before that, I was…See More

Stewart M. Davenport replied to Josh's discussion Armpits shaving or not?
"My wife likes my hair tamed, but she doesn't want me to get rid of any of it entirely. She likes the look of hair on a man. I'd say don't shave, and unless your pit hair is really out of control, don't trim it either. "
