Greetings Gents,

For the last few years I've been writing a blog. I've no specific focus for the thing, it's just an outlet for me to write about things that I happen to have on my mind at any given time, editorial commentary of current events, share stories about recent outdoor adventures with a bit of cooking and sports mixed in as well.

The blog can be found here: http://thedamntrueexperiment.blogspot.com/

I'm wondering a couple of things and I'd like to get your thoughts.

  • What is the cultural norm here for sharing this type of content as I don't wish to run afoul of the community norm.
  • What if any constructive criticism might those of you legit writers offer to an amateur?
  • Thus far, my only "promotion" of the blog has been via twitter and occasionally sharing individual pieces on other web forums where the content is appropriate. Recognizing that scattered nature of the content is a detriment to doing so, how might one achieve a broader readership?

Thank you, and I look forward to your input.

True,

Good post. I have a blog myself which I use to post photos and tips on outdoor stuff. I'm no expert here but perhaps, like you, I enjoy owning and using a little piece of the internet.

For me its also a platform for promoting the book I'm about to self publish and for this reason I generally stay away from political commentry. Another preference of mine is for plenty of pictures which can serve to pull in the casual browser. I've also used a custom banner for the same reason

Other AOM readers may have different experiences but I find its easier to get followers through other social media platforms like twitter than to get followers for the blog itself although with one you can direct traffic to the other pretty effectively.

Anyway, just sharin my two cents.

Cheers, Tom

Thanks for the comment.

I do use quite a number of photos in my outdoors and cooking related posts. Pretty tough to do that with the sports & political stuff as I don't want to use images that aren't mine unless they are in the public domain.

Hello True,

I also have a blog that is a compendium of various thoughts.  Do you know how many hits a day you are receiving approximately?  Just curious as I feel like mine is barely being read.  I will take a look at yours and if you don't mind please check mine out.  http://www.cognitivecompost.com

I don't see a way to leave a comment on your blog posts.

The death of neck ties?

I heard that according to researches that the neck tie is expected to become obsolete in the next few decades. Because more and more men are dressing more casually these days thanks to Facebook and google where the CEO shows up in jeans and a hoodie. So is the neck tie really becoming obsolete or are men just not caring about his personal appearance? Please feel free to give your taken on this.See More
