Hello all, just the right group to get started with. To introduce myself, my name is Matt, and I am a carpenter by trade. At this time I am on a seasonal lay-off, but am still using my trade for personal enjoyment. Right now I am looking for a small project to keep busy, and am debating the idea of building my own Humidor. Sorry for the long post,
Cheers,
Matt

no, things are too up in the air with the house for me to start anything big. May end up breaking out the sander and strip down the triple. Been meaning to re-varnish the deck and the hull is a little banged up from the summer.

Starting 2 new projects over the Christmas vacation,

3 pine wood derby cars for my 2 sons and one for me (they have a Dad's outlaw class :) )

Contract on my house fell through, so I'm going to be spending a little quality time in my workshop/man cave. Especially since all of my wife's family will be here. That's WAY too much estrogen for me.

Any appropriately sized box should do. I'm sure that many free plans for such boxes are available. If one is a good design, you can always adjust dimensions to your liking. A box of this size (I'm assuming about 24"x8"x6" wouldn't be too hard to custom design). I usually have specific needs in a piece of furniture and design accordingly.

Done some googleing (if that's a word) for a shoe shine box design and haven't been able to locate any free ones yet. Anyone have any ideas?

Fine Woodworking (www.taunton.com/finewoodworking) has great resources for learning all techniques. If you're interested in getting started, an online subscription would probably be best; you get access to the entire archives, so there are hundreds and hundreds of articles. The magazine subscription is good if you've decided you really enjoy the hobby and want to learn new things in general about the craft. There are also many good reference books that FWW has for sale and also free technique videos to watch.
Because I don't need to go anywhere else online for help, I don't know about other sites or resources, though I imagine they are plenty (and probably lots of them free). Hope this helps.

How are the handtools going? Do you know of any good resources for learning?
Comment by Reuben Bruchez on April 10, 2009 at 11:08am
I've personally decided to relearn how to do things the slow way, with all hand tools. It never hurts to learn how to do it the hard way, except for time.

I have started a bit on this hooby myself. The support I get from my wife helps too. She purchased some classes for me at a great lumber store nearby that helped immensely.
I have built a bench and 3 large garden boxes. More projects are on the docket.

Well in my spare time (not that much) I'm working on getting my shop setup in the basement, along with adding a stair case from the second floor to the attic of our house. I have found that, when I get home from work I work one hour and then quite for the day and amazing I get a lot done.
