Gentlemen,

I am currently in search of an affordable (<$80) , and NEW straight razor to begin learning the art of straight shaving. If any of you know of a good source or have found them online or otherwise please give me a heads up! (and no, Richards Razors is not a good source, if you even joke about that I'll virtually slap you) haha, just kidding, but seriously...

Thanks

-Evan

Why the emphasis on NEW? I've had over 300 different straights and never owned a new one. Even if you buy a new razor you'll then have to spend around $30 getting it honed.

The best inexpensive razor to start with is a Wapienica. I bought/honed/sold 25 of them back when I was in the throes of RAD. You may even find a cheap one that has had replacement scales installed. The original SS scales were a tad heavy for the blade.

I'd recommend you join straightrazorplace.com and participate in the forums there. They have a good marketplace and lots of free advice.

RICHARD is good for a laugh every now and then, but all of his stuff is vastly overpriced. I can't recall having seen him spam a straight.

*edit to add: Check out this eBay auction http://www.ebay.com/itm/POLISH-RAZOR-FROM-WAPIENICA-ORIGINAL-NOS-WA...

I know this guy. Don't be concerned he's in Poland. Buy one, send it to one of the honemeisters on SRP (can't go wrong with Lynn, he's a straight shooter) to have it honed. Enjoy.

That's what I love about this community, thorough, concise responses. Thank you sir!

I'd be interested in your experiences as you learn this "art form" of shaving.  I however can't help you with your purchase decision though.  But please do keep us posted on your progress, and post a pick of the kit you settle on, even some of the variations you try in the Shave of the Day Topic.  Straights both fascinate me and terrify me all in the same moment...LOL...Good Luck Evan...

I am seeing a lot of straights go up for sale over at The Shaving Nook.  You might want to check out the Sell and Trade Section.  I just bought a Schick Krona off a guy over there and the transaction went very smoothly.

I just signed up...thanks for the link.
