I'm 55, and in the gym every day.  I've got good ab muscles, but eating is my problem and always has been.  I've got a small gut below my stomach, and I've always had love handles.  I prefer to keep my weight around 167 but am usually 3-8 lbs. above that.  I wish I were more serious about portion control, getting enough sleep, and not eating late at night.   I'm on BodySpace but haven't updated my profile pic since two years ago who when I weighed 161 and was leaner.  I allot less time for cardio now, and probably need to ramp that back up.  I guess I need more resolve.

I agree Michael. The jury is still out on whether eating every 2-4 hours has any effect on metabolism. The old adage was to 'eat every 2-4 hours to keep the fire burning'. New research is showing that it makes no difference if a person eats all of their calories at one sitting or split over 5+ meals. Of course, blood sugar is a separate issue and you've found what works for you.

I've experimented with varying diet protocols including intermittent fasting, one large meal per day, 5 per day etc. At the end of the day, everyone responds differently, and there is typically several ways to skin a cat, as they say ;). For me, one large meal was simply too much food to process at one time. Perhaps I could have built up my stamina ;), but I typically ended up crashing afterwards (think Turkey dinner).

I know many swear by intermittent Fasting. Brad Pillon (Eat Stop Eat) wrote a very comprehensive book on the subject for anyone interested (no I'm not affiliated with him).

due to sugar problems eating twice a day never works well for me unless I wake up late and eat a late breakfast normally I eat smaller meals 4 times a day every 4 hours

That's great Larry - nice to see progress and congrats on your success to date.

I'm curious what your 2 meals look like as far as Protein / Carb / Fat balance. Weight loss can occur with virtually any foods, provided there is a calorie deficit. You just want to be conscious that you're getting enough calories as well as the right balance of foods (macronutrients and micronutrients).

Many fall into the 'If less is more (meaning calorie restriction), then even less is better). The problem you can run into is adversely affecting metabolism if things are too low, as well as your body turning to muscle for fuel (in extreme cases). The ultimate goal is to maintain (or increase lean body mass (LBM) and burn off body fat.

Slow and steady weight loss is healthy and sustainable. Quick weight loss is not. Shoot for 1-2 lbs per week. As well, I don't recommend anything lower than 1500 cals / day for my male clients. Food for thought.

I have a job at which I stay active.  It's not a physically demanding job; it's just that there's lots to do that requires "elbow grease".  That's 8 hours, x 5 days/week. I don't eat, on my break; I don't really want anything.  I eat 2 meals a day.

I lost 18 pounds!  I'm at 288.4.  I have a long way to go, yet, but I'm down 18 pounds, from my heaviest!
