Several popes have written on why Catholics can not become Free Masons.
Comment by Charlie DelPino on February 5, 2012 at 6:20pm It isn't possible, or at least not officially nor morally. Membership in Masonic organizations has been forbidden to Catholics since 1738. For a time, becoming a member meant automatic Excommunication. Since 1985, that stance was softened to membership places you in a "state of grave sin and unable to receive Holy Communion."
