(this is from yesterday.)

I just witnessed a fantastic expression of freedom. I was driving home on the
highway, and a Chrysler Sebring convertible was in front of me. The guy behind
the wheel was on the phone. No sooner had I thought to myself, "If I had a
convertible, I'd make it a rule to drive shirtless when the top is down," than I
see the guy put down the phone, grab the neck of his red T-shirt and pull it off
at 55 miles per hour! For me, that's a defining gesture of being a man. It was
inspiring. I pulled up beside him, honked the horn and gave him a thumbs up.
He replied with a wave and continued to enjoy his bare-chested drive.

I thought it would have been anti-climactic for me to strip in my little sedan,
so I waited patiently to get home and lose the shirt. How fortunate was I to
get to see that!

It´s quite normal for me to work shirtless during summertime over here in Germany: roofing, doing construction or yard work. It feels more manly and it seems to be more productive.

I took a four hour road trip on Thursday.  Lost the shirt as soon as I got my breakfast to go.  At the rest stop halfway, I stopped for a smoke and a bathroom break.  The French Canadian parked next to me gave me a cursory look.  I walked to the picnic area and enjoyed one cigarette, used the restroom and ambled back to the car.  It was a fantastic drive.

I have to admit, I've never been one to take my shirt off and I've often been jealous of the ones who do.  I felt I never had the good looking body to do it.  Now that I have back hair it's even less.  It's a confidence thing I know.  There are plenty of fit/muscled men who go shirtless but I have to admire the 600lb + guy who's shirtless and barefoot at a pool or beach.  Proud of his size and showing it off.  Although that my repulse some people, you have to admit that is confidence.  And that's what we (those who don't) need to develop so we do feel proud of ourselves; enough to be rugged...go shirtless.

In my comfort level with this group. Prefer to keep boxers on my junk. Sorry Ray. Your pics were a turnoff for me. No offense meant. Just not appropriate for me.

Nice group! Here in Argentina it's is normal for guys to go shirtless in summer/spring, when at green open green spaces like when going camping, or anywhere. And not just the buff but average guys go shirtless too, I think it is because its something so naturally manly (in fact women dont it hehe), and feels freeing. Sorry for my english!

Thanks for sharing your story Bruce.
I was a pudgy little boy with boobs, so I never was without a shirt. In HS I shot up to six feet and became a rail, so I went from one extreme to the other. Now in middle age I've gotten a torso I am proud of, but old habits die hard. I'll keep trying.
Eric, rock on.

Welcome Eric. You may have paused to wonder what some may think of your photo, but you posted it anyway, and I suspect you have not since become a social pariah. Confidence wins the day, again! Cheers, Bruce

Hey Carl, Welcome to the group. Nice to hear you've found that joining the group helps you deal with your shirtless "comfort zone". Since I began this group I've found it fascinating how many different attitudes and emotions people bring to the simple condition of either wearing or not wearing a shirt among friends, family, colleagues and the general public. I, too, was a virtual stick-man in my youth, but when I didn't need a shirt I often didn't wear one, without giving it a thought. I guess the difference between you and I is simply what we grew up doing among our friends and family when we were kids. What DID make me start thinking about, though, it was that it's becoming less accepted and less commonplace.  Now ,with increased gentrification (shirtless equals lower-class), excessive air-conditioning everywhere, body-image near-paranoia (I'm too fat/too thin/not muscular, etc.), erroneous health concerns (eeeew! sweat and germs!) and erroded masculine self-confidence (what will they think of me?), we have to concern ourselves with the appropriateness of going without a shirt in almost any situation.  Sadly, shirtlessness has become a statment, whether intended or not, rather than just a way to dress in casual situations and/or warm conditions. Keep exploring confidently outside that comfort zone and pretty soon it'll be just second nature

I admire Eric's cheek. I still suffer from a lifetime of negative body image, so shirtless for me is way out of my comfort zone.

That's why I joined this, lol.
