Hello there, kilt-wearing gents. First off, let me say I do not actually wear a kilt--yet. I am very much interested in the idea, so I wanted to get some input from the kilt-wearers. First off, what Tartan should I wear? (I am of Irish descent, Flanagan clan). Second, what is the actual "rule" as far as going commando with one? Any other advice y'all have to share would be much appreciated.

Wear a tartan that you like. There are tartans that are designed to be marketed to Irish guys, and some of them are pretty nice looking. It has become sort of a tradition for the Irish to wear saffron. Google "saffron kilt", hit "images" and you will see images of a lot of Irish pipe bands. In the end, just pick a tartan you like and go with that. There is only one rule as far as going regimental, and that is; never tell one way or the other. Keep 'em guessing.

there are no rules.  there are no kilt police.  wear any tartan you like.  it is just encouraged that whatever tartan you wear, know it's meaning and history.  do know that some tartans are frequently woven, others less so; that makes for a big difference on the price.  for example: Royal Stewart is very common and easy to find; you could even buy one off the rack, so to speak.  Boyd Ancient is not, such a kilt would be made to order and thus high dollar. (i know cause i want one, my mom's mom was a Boyd, and it is a beautiful tartan.)

as for wearing a kilt "regimental" (sans underwear), that is absolutely up to you.  just know that some wool can feel rough on delicate skin.  also, know that kilts of 100% wool are not easily cleaned, so a regimental kilt wearer must be fastidious with hygiene.

Thanks for the advice, Ian (and Tom).  Do you know of anywhere where I could get a cheap kilt (I'm on a student's budget) that still looks good?  Or does such a thing not exist?

The frugal corner is one place to look for inexpensive kilts. Ebay usually has quite a few listed. If you plan on wearing kilt hose, you might want to invest in some hose flashes else your hose shall be around your ankles. Happy to help anyway I can.

Is the frugal corner still in business? Every web address I have for them gives me a 404 or domain down.

I assume that they are. Last thing I heard they were moving locations so I just thought that the 404 meant that they were not yet up and running at their new location. If you here something please let me know, I would like to order and Keith Ancient kilt from them.
