I've been giving a lot of thought to getting really serious about my weight training lately. Been researching a bit about how to get into powerlifting as a (relative) beginner.  Learning quite a bit.  Hopefully I'll post my finds this week.

I just gotta say that when reading a thread in this group, I love it when it says "Back to Heavy Discussions" at the top. It makes this group sound so serious! hahaha

If I remember correctly the article tells why. Basically, and I think it was the Russians, people started creating their own shoes with a raised heel thereby getting away from dress shoes. The big selling point was a metatarsal strap that provided a solid base instead of the foot coming out of the shoe. Slippage was also an issue. The new shoes covered that as well.

That's cool. So why'd they stop?

A lot of those guys lifted in loafers/dress shoes back in the day. The heel was roughly 1/2" which is perfect for engaging just enough quad while keeping the hamstrings thoroughly engaged. Here's an interesting link on the history of Oly shoes:

Thanks Jameson! I googled "Powerlifter" or something, and came across it. It seemed nice and old school to me. Can you imagine lifting in those shoes? haha!

Nice pic of Paul Anderson. If anyone is interested in a print of Anatoly Pisarenko here's a link: http://www.killustrated.com/pisarenko-print.html
