This is probably my favorite group on AoM, just because of its premise. I love it.

So we've all got a favorite lift. There are so many out there, but really there's always one that really gets your juices flowing and ignites the flame of ambition.

So what's your favorite lift? Why is it your favorite lift? And just for fun, what's the most weight you've ever pulled, pushed, moved, or what have you?

I'll start with mine: the deadlift. In my opinion, it's THE lift for anyone looking to build mass of any sort. Right now my max is at 245 lbs. Looking to break that with a  new PR in the next month or so though...

Your question made me join this group, though I would not consider myself a powerlifter (but that's pretty much what I do in the gym).

Favorite is a funny word to use, for Arthur Jones said that if you enjoyed doing an exercise then you were not doing it correctly.

Semantic aside, I must agree with you on the deadlift, though I can't say favorite, cause I simply dread doing them too much.

Squats used to be my "favorite" training exercise, but now I think I do appreciate the deadlift more.

Since I've been hitting them regularly and heavy, (325 at this time, for five reps a set) I've felt my entire upper body respond. I am no longer a man with bigger arms and legs, I've thickened noticeably across my entire torso and midsection.

They are also a great grip strengthener; I don't do any isolation forearm work yet they have responded well to just the deadlifts.

So, great topic; thanks for posting!

My favorite lift has to be the "overhead anyhow." Clean, snatch, continental, press, jerk, whatever - getting something from the floor to overhead is how I've always judged my overall strength. While I don't "push" this lift, but use it sparingly for fun and testing, I've pressed overhead a 110lb dumbbell, 205lb barbell (though it's been a while, and I'm stronger now), and I think I got a 150lb sandbag overhead a year or so ago - I can't remember. I've pressed my wife overhead, too. I guess that counts...

I'm curious to test my barbell strength now.. Maybe I can post a PR later.

My favorite is a deep low-bar back squat a la Mark Rippetoe. I am a bit new to lifting and my heaviest was 205 for a set of 5. Right now it is considerably lower.

The Primacy and Existence of God

I am convinced that all men have a built in awareness that there is one true and living God that rises to the surface in a crisis. But, to know Him personally, one must respond correctly to His revelation of himself to man ... in Creation and history ... but most importantly, when he became flesh and dwelt among us ... 2000 years…See More
