They dropped a bombshell. I think it's worth discussing.

Would you care to summarize your thoughts on the matter?

My own thoughts are conflicted. Half with the unsurprised, but still disappointed revelations. And half with the very real damage this leak presents, since they didn't redact large sections of code snippets, making countermeasures easier for foreign governments to develop.

My own thoughts are conflicted. I'll post them after some more people chime in.

No evidence it's ever been used against citizens of the US, but it certainly benefits our foreign enemies to know some of the tactics that our intelligence agency uses.

From a perspective as private citizen: No surprise at all, its kinda what you expected anyway.

From a professional perspective: As a company we spend millions each year for IT security and a lot of it is to protect against the USA which is ridiculous considering they are considered a ally. It is also at a point were it is damaging for for US company's (good for us from a european perspective) since the they loose trust in with that customers.

Help me put together what's the news here.

I think it's about fedswiretapping (whom?).  If so:  is there news, or just confirmation?

A little bit of searching gets this info on recent wiretaps in one case:

NYTimes says they wiretapped Flynn's calls to Russian diplomats (and "routinely" wiretap such calls):  https://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/02/us/politics/kushner-flynn-sessio...

and that it was part of an investigation:  https://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/19/us/politics/trump-russia-associa...

Both those articles attribute the wiretaps at least partly to "American intelligence agencies," so it can't be that it's intelligence agencies doing it, right?

If the reaction is, "We need to know that intelligence agencies are wiretapping American citizens," I understand.  Just not sure yet how Wikileaks contributed to that.  Admittedly I haven't dug into that extensively.

This is a different leak - more about embedded spy software in our phones, smart TVs and the like.

Would have been helpful if PH has been more specific in the OP.

I was referring to Vault 7, but any other related subjects are welcome.

This is specifically about the drop about the CIA able to turn Samsung TVs into listening devices and phones and the like; but no one should be surprised by this.  Hell Asange did a tutorial on how it was done and how to combat it over a year ago for crying out loud.

About the wiretaps, all calls to foreign diplomats are tapped.  Flynn knew this, which is why no one can understand why he didn't come forward with the information...

A modest note to the paranoid.  Even if Wikileaks published accurate and complete CIA software...there are 16 OTHER US intelligence agencies.  And the really paranoid wonder if this "revelation" is a CIA initiated smokescreen, so folks will waste time on it and miss the real technology and software that compromises your smartphone and the rest of your IoT devices.

My advice.  Don't do shit that'll make the government interested in watching you.  If you do that, you don't have anything to worry about.

Millions of Soviet citizens got executed after doing nothing in particular to make government interested in watching them.  Half the population of Cambodia.  12 million Europeans in areas controlled by the Nazis.  Even in this country, you could be a peaceful unassuming person and get sent to prison (Japanese) or get massacred (Indians).  I think we need to be a little more proactive in stopping government from misusing its powers.  (Not saying whether it was in this instance, as I haven't looked into it yet.)

There is no evidence that our government is misusing it's powers, but you've made a valid point.  I still have much more important things to do then to put on my tinfoil hat and worry that the government is watching me type this message through my iPhone camera.  I choose not to live my life in fear, or constant suspicion.

Dealing with a depressing job

Hi all,I'm looking for some advice on a work issue. Basically my job is getting me down, some days I feel ok, others I feel down and dread going in.I've ended up working in a hotel and mostly night shift. The nature of the work doesn't bother me, other than it's not what I trained for (I have a degree in law). What's bothering me is the fact that while I live with my fiancee, she works a 9-5 and I have to do 5 nights a week most days. This means we're like passing ships and I don't get to see…See More
