Ostensibly because of an affair. Of course it does seem suspicious that it comes 3 days after the election and 5 days before he was supposed to testify before Congress about Benghazi.

And whether he did it or not,he threw a woman's reputation under the bus.

If the current reporting is correct, the DCIA didn't "throw the woman's reputation under the bus."

It is a disappointment that the man has acted so negligently in what concerns his career. It is also strange that now it seems he will not testify--but why not? Was not he director of the CIA when the disaster in Libya took place?

As a private citizen he can only be called to testify in an open hearing.

"Mr. Petraeus, as Director of the CIA <insert Benghazi question here>?"

"Senator, I'm afraid I cannot answer that question without divulging classified information."

Wouldn't be very effective.

Well, if that sort of thing holds, then I must admit Mr. Obama has once again succeeded were lesser men would have failed. Having an ambassador get killed in a protracted firefight on embassy / CIA real estate & making sure nobody would be held accountable is no small feat for a politician in the executive branch. I am pleased to see that the new American political economy model--the buck never stops anywhere in sight--is a great success.

During the embassy attack in Libya, when the ambassader was killed. Yes he was.

As usual, there's a whole lot going on that hasn't - and won't ever - make the press.

Typical "let's hope it gets buried in the week end news" political timing on the announcement of the resignation.

Suspicious timing, indeed.  This Benghazi fiasco ain't over.

Doesn't bode well for cheaters that not even the director of the CIA could avoid getting caught.

Heh. Spy jokes? How about surge jokes?

What's always of interest is how "everything" starts coming from the usual anonymous, unauthorized, unattribuatable source once the collander of the Senate Intelligence Committee staff gets briefed.

Hey, leaking information is one of the staples of the American style of government...

I know, but there are a few groups in the government that are expected and required to be close mouthed.

I personally know a few retired folks who are still bound by government security and nondisclosure agreements they signed decades ago...and they still aren't saying anything.
