Today is Veterans Day and for all those who are actively serving in the US Military, the National Guard, the Air National Guard, and the various State Defence Forces; and for the Veterans who served in all eras, thank you for your service from myself, a vet and a grateful nation. Without you, we would not be enjoying the liberty we have in this nation.
A Veteran whether active duty, retired, National Guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in his or her life, wrote a blank check, made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life." -- Author Unknown

Secretary of Defense has declared a moment of silence for U.S. military forces worldwide as a show of respect for the Fort Hood victims.

The moment of silence is planned to occur exactly 24hrs after the shooting in Texas. 1:34pm(CST). All U.S. forces worldwide are being asked to participate.

At Mount Tahoma National Cemetary, while we are working as the Honor Guard, we do work with the Honor Guard from the Army National Guard from Camp Murray, the Air Force Honor Guard from McHord AFB, and the Navy Honor Guard from Everett. We have also worked with an Honor Guard from the Marine Corps. The WSG Honor Guard primarily performs the service and the gun salute, whereas the Honor Guards from the bases fold the Flag, bring in the Urn or Casket. We also have worked with the Honor Guards from the VSOs, mainly the VFW.

@William Neal: Do you do work with Honor Guard from the bases around Washington as well?

Dave, the State Defence Forces are a good place to serve your country and state. I found out about the Washington State Guard two years ago. It is the best kept secret. Currently there are 23 states that have a State Defence Force. They are volunteer. Google SGAUS. Oh, I forgot to mention, I am a member of the Washington State Guard Honor Guard and we perform funeral service duty for fallen veterans.

Served in the Air Force from 1974-1980. Currently a member of the Civil Air Patrol and the Washington State Guard, part of the State Defence Forces. Was a member of the US Naval Sea Cadets when I was in Junior High.

Gentlemen, thank you for your suggestions. I should add that I teach martial arts in my small, rural community. It gives me great pleasure to reach out to young people and help them achieve the self-discipline they so desperately need, and crave. (It works for adults, too.) In my own small way, I am helping my community, helping to give it a cadre of people who will be willing to step forward when the chips are down. I will take a look at some of the options you have mentioned. Thanks for your input, and thanks for your service to our nation.
