I appreciate the positive comments but It seems that this forum is geared more towards military style haircuts than Don Draper style cuts.  I don't do the military style as it makes me look like an idiot.  My neighbor does and he looks great in it.  Any feedback from forum members who do not prefer the military style?

Brandon.  Most barbershops can do all sorts of hair, though I know what you're asking.  Look at the racial mix in that area, and it'll tell you what you need to know...it is unlikely a black barbershop will be successful in a primarily white area, or vice-versa.
 

As to recommendations, I'll say it again.  Call the cops.  General information line.  Ask for a recommendation.  Those guys usually live in barbershop cuts and they know the best barbers in the area. 

 

I usually get 2 or 3 recommendations, then call those shops, and go to the one that gives me a "good vibe."  The idea is to glean a little information over the phone...think of it as a pre-interview. 

 

Speaking only for myself, I prefer a male barber, so if "Buffy" answers the phone I consider that a negative.  And since I ask for a "military styled" cut, I have a fondness for veterans whenever possible.  It's amazing the information you can get from 30 seconds of "chit-chat."

Thanks Chuck and B.A.   Rob sounds closer to my neck of the woods as I'm on the southeast side (Forney).  I don't go too short unless I'm doing it myself.  M&M sounds great, especially the lack of a phone, but that's a bit north for me.

Rob is down by Fair Park, near the Farmer's Market, if memory serves.  Call first.  Make an appointment.  And, prepare to pay a little more...from what I've heard he's very good, and he knows his stuff.  And he has kind of a rockabilly vibe.

 

Rob's on my short list of barbers to try, when I ever manage to get down that way again, with enough hair to cut.

 

Second, there's a shop someone referred me to in McKinney, M&M Barbershop, I think it was.  Also supposed to be good, though I've not tried it, either.  A bit odd, though, because they don't even have a working phone...it's all walk in and word of mouth, and since I can't call ahead I've not yet found it possible to work them into my schedule.

 

Third, I've heard excellent things about "The Fade Shop," which has 2 locations on opposite ends of town.  They're known for their military cuts and fades, obviously, and Ozell (the owner) is a veteran with very high standards.  He was featured on the reality show "Split Ends."

 

Fourth.  Unfortunately, my favorite old barbershop is closed, but this last one is the closest I've found.  It's also where I received *the* tightest flattop I've ever gotten.  I received it from Jim's Barbershop in downtown Garland.  He's an old fashioned barber who understands the word short.  He's...enthusiastic.  Be careful what you ask for, you might just get it.  (He was a police recommendation, by the way)

@Matt Kelley. Dallas? Look for Rob's Chop Shop. I've never been, but as far as Dallas goes, I've heard good things.

@Nick:  When investigating a new barber, I suggest you call the police!  And yes, I'm totally serious. 

 

The police (and other first responders like firemen) will usually be familiar with the local barbershops, and who does the best cuts, especially short/military cuts like flattops.  

 

Call their general information line and ask for a referral.

I am located around the Hillsboro area. I always get a flat top when I get a cut. I would like to find a traditional barber shop. I am white. I know what you mean about different races doing different hair types. I had on AA barber that did really good and another that had no idea how to do a flat top and I ended up with a fade basically. I'd like someone that just knows what they are doing. Last place I went to they didnt even know how to block off the back and completely hacked my beard off when I asked for a trim and a shape up. Any info would be great. Thanks.

Also price range??  Although a good barber and shop is worth its weight in gold, people have financial limits.
