So I recently became aware that one of the parents of a boy in our troop believes that I am too strict and too hard on her son. She thinks I'm picking on her boy. The situation is that her son…Continue

I was in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts until I was 16.  I got to the Star rank.  As an adult, perhaps the only regret I carry with me is that I didn't get my Eagle Scout.  I realize that's a lost dream…Continue

The role of religion in scouting seems to vary a bit by location, and troop. As laid out in the handbook, it cannot be ignored, but it doesn't require significant personal practice (especially as you are not the sole leader) - pretty much as long as you are not an atheist, you are covered. If you are interested, look at different troops in your area - I expect you'll find they run the gamut.

Might be an interesting topic for discussion. The importance of personal religion/spirituality in adult scouting leadership - I expect it has changed a lot over time as well. There was a big shift in the late 80s, as I recall.

Many years ago when I was a kid I joins the Boy Scouts. I regret not sticking with it. I was considering volunteering, maybe as a Assistant Scout Master. My only concern is that I am not a very spiritual/religious person. I know that religion is a foundation on the scouts. Any thoughts?

Cora Evans, I can not figure our how to respond to you but the BSA is a member of the World organization of scouting. Hence the purple patch on your left chest. The Philippines do have their own form of scouting, a camp I worked at had a guest counselor from there.

Hello Frank, As Kory pointed out, you are too old to earn the youth badges but I can heartily recommend Woodbadge. This is a leadership program for adults and you earn your beads by going through much of the same things we ask the boys to do. Baden-Powell started the program shortly after establishing Boy Scouts.

Personal and Political Advice from Rome.

His Holiness, Pope Francis, has a warning sign posted outside his office door.It begins "VIETATO LAMENTARSI"In English, "WHINERS PROHIBITED."The sign ends with “To get the best out of yourself, concentrate on your potential and not on your limitations.
