Ok, i am fed up with the irritation from cartridge razors on not only my face but my wallet. I NEED a good alternative. I know that safety razors are the next best thing to strait razor shaving BUT I can't find them at any stores. I always see the refills for them, but not the handles. I don't necessarily want to wait for one to come in off the internet, where can I go?

I had the same issue when I switched to a safety razor. I decided to buy online though because I could get exactly what I wanted. I bought my Edwin Jagger from Amazon and couldn't be happier. I bypassed all of the Merkur hype because most of he reviews I read said they liked the Merkur but their favorite was their Edwin Jagger. Once you shave with your new safety razor, you'll never go back.

You can get a decent vintage safety razor for not much cash on ebay.

I have a couple of Gillettes that I picked up for less than £10 a piece.

Get yourself a brush and shaving soap while you are at it, you won't regret it.

By coincidence I just posted an article about inexpensive, "entry level" traditional shaving products that might help: http://sharpologist.com/2012/04/16-inexpensive-entries.html but of course most of the razor products can't be found locally.  In the wilds of OK where you are your best bet is an antique shop or an old relative who may have a vintage razor in their bathroom drawer.  :)

It all depends on if you want new or vintage. If you want new the best option is to buy online.  I personally could not tell you what razor to buy if you prefer a new "modern" DE safety razor having never bought one.  I have however purchased, accordingly to my wife, too many vintage razors.  The best places to look, 1 - Grandpas or Uncles house, ( I have gotten 2 safeties and 2 straights this way), 2 - Antique Shop/Flea Market, ( 7 of my personal razors have been purchased this way) and last but not least 3 - Online Auctions/Classifieds, I have purchased only 1 razor this way, but it is one of my more collectible pieces.  I would suggest that if you are just beginning and you want a solid razor go with a vintage Gillette.  Look for a simple TTO.  Most vintage Gillette razors you find will fall in the range of a 1960 - 1980ish TTO and these are great dependable razors.  The best part is that you can pickup a good razor for about $10-15 on average.  I have 12 razors in my collection and I have yet to spend the same $$ that I would have on some of the average priced Merkur or Ed Jag.  Happy Hunting, and welcome to the club!

I ordered at Murker 180 long handle off of Amazon for 33.00 plus a starter shaving set including an apothecary mug, razor/brush stand, boar brush, and soap for 29.00, and i got a set of 10 wilkinson & sword DE blades for $1.76 at walmart so I'm all set.

I found that www.classicshaving.com is a great resource too...
