An open forum for discussion of the big questions.

Ah Philosophy, the search for the great answers of life itself and the greater meaning of it all. I've read quite a few comments since the AoM community was founded, and it would appear to me that there are quite a few armchair-philosophers out there.

I propose to use this forum to encourage intelligent discussion among us. In this spirit, I'll be posing a daily philosophical question in the Discussion section. I'm looking forward to the coming discussions.

I found this out there on the internet somewhere...thought it would be appropriate to post it here...

The statement, "There are no absolutes" is not an absolute unless you organizing the world according to a modernistic epistemology. Holding a chastened epistemology allows for a much more fluid understanding of "truth" or "absolutes" since even those very words mean different things to different people at different times.

Kind of like the statement you hear sometimes: "all truth is relative".

Isn't the statement, "There are no absolutes!" ... an absolute?

How about taking an argument we come across, in a news article or even on here, and try to break down its probable fallacy. I think most would be easy to detect, e.g. ad hominem, affirming the consequent, etc. Hell, even that statement about "most would be easy to detect" is based on broad assumptions.

All philosophers should embrace logic
We are all philosophers
Therefore, we should all embrace logic

I think that's a great idea Leo, it's the implementation that's the tricky bit...any suggestions?

Has one here taken and practice formal logic? I think it'd be fun to practice, so these philosophical topics become more fun.
