The Perks of Being Over 50

Snagged from this website:

1. Kidnappers are not very interested in you.
2. In a hostage situation, you are likely to be released first.
3. No one expects you to run -- anywhere.
4. People call at 9 p.m. and ask, "Did I wake you?"
5. People no longer view you as a hypochondriac.
6. There is nothing left to learn the hard way.
7. Things you buy now won't wear out.
8. You can eat dinner at 4 p.m.
9. You can live without sex (though not without glasses).
10. You enjoy hearing about other people's operations.
11. You get into heated arguments about pension plans.
12. You have a party and the neighbors don't even realize it.
13. You no longer think of speed limits as a challenge.
14. You quit trying to hold your stomach in, no matter who walks into the room.
15. You sing along with elevator music.
16. Your eyes won't get much worse.
17. Your investment in health insurance is finally beginning to pay off.
18. Your joints are more accurate meteorologists than the National Weather Service.
19. Your secrets are safe with your friends because they can't remember them, either.
20. Your supply of brain cells is finally down to a manageable size.

Terry, I understand what you mean about having a mind that still thinks _young_, but forgetting that your body has started to slow down and show the effects of age. I'm 52, and to me, the 70's were last week. Then, I remember they were nearly 40 years ago! When white and grey hair starts popping up in places (aside from your beard and the top of your head), it's a bit unsettling. Taking into account that a lot of people I went to school with are dead now, I consider myself blessed to have made it this far.

I'm not really keeping up with AoM these days due to some more extreme behaviors that the site creator and "mods" are ignoring, but I do check in once in a great while. I hope that all of you guys are doing well and enjoying your lives.

Happy birthday, Terry. I agree. I still think like a twenty year old but my body has grown older around me. LOL.

Concerning "I think I'm a lot smarter than I was 20-25yr ago": When I've been asked if I would want to go back to my younger days, my response has been, "Yes, but only if I could take back with me what I have learned in life."  (I wouldn't want to start over again.)

In just over a month I will turn 60. This is hard for me to believe, as it doesn't seem that long ago my wife and I visited my father in Arizona to celebrate his 60th. (It was 1995). Two months minus two days after the birthday, I will have my left knee replaced, matching the replacement of the right, which occurred in early 2012. My overall endurance isn't as good as it used to be, I have to use reading glasses now, but on the plus side I think I'm a lot smarter than I was 20-25yr ago. And I'm working actively on my bucket list. A new novel will be published next week; my wife and I rode horses in Tibet last May, and next summer we will have a joint 60th birthday celebration (hers is in June) by climbing through the Andes to Machu Picchu. A year after that we plan to climb Mt Kilimanjaro in Africa.

I know it sure is true what they say time certainly does fly. I certainly have been blessed as the years have gone by except for the aches and pains that I mentioned. I can still do everything I used to do within in reason except I find I tire quicker my endurance isn't what it used to be. I wonder if any of my new Friends do this. I sometimes observe older people and think to myself thats and old man or thats an old women forgetting the fact that Im the same age as they are. It seems that in my head I still think like a 20 yr old except that my body has grown older around me. Weird!

I also have a Sept. birthday -- 67 (Sept. used to be the month with the most birthday, the supposed reason being it was 9 months after New Year's Eve).

I guess you may have heard this before, but I'll share it anyway.

Do you know what's difficult about growing older"

  • The aches
  • The wrinkles
  • (I can't remember the third one.)

Hi Friends! Well I just celebrated my 57 Birthday on the 16th. Nothing has changed I still have all my aches and pains (Chuckle). I guess its something I will just have to get used to. How are all my AOM Friends doing?

Comment by Terry Glenn Rempel on June 14, 2016 at 9:54pm

Hi Friends! I laughed when I read no.5 My aches and pains are real now, not just my imagination (Chuckle).
