The hat, distinguished by having a brim all the way around, is manly. Let's talk about hats.

Comment by Daniel G. on September 7, 2012 at 4:10pm Just joined the group: I have a charcoal grey flat cap, a gray Bogart-style fedora, and a stingy brim straw fedora for summertime.
Comment by Landon Orsi on August 20, 2012 at 7:22am I have an old looking brown porkpie hat
Comment by Bryant Herrera on March 17, 2012 at 7:47am As you gents can see I'm a big fan of hats. Especially after shaving the grape bald for over five years now. Living in Florida it becomes functional to beat back the sun. I also think it allows me to distinguish myself from others in a gentlemanly and fashionable way.
Comment by Joe Dreyfuss on February 20, 2012 at 1:12pm I recently came into possession of a Dobbs Carleton straw fedora for summer use and it turned out to be a lighter gray than I expected, closer to a dove gray than a charcoal or Oxford, like my winter dress hat. I was wondering if this made it too casual to wear as a dress hat during the summer, since I'll be working in Houston this summer and a felt hat obviously wouldn't be suited to that weather.
Separately, I was also wondering if light gray made it too light to wear with blue suits if it was still suitable as a dress hat for gray or taupe.
Comment by Luke Nierenhausen on January 27, 2012 at 10:41pm I also noticed the crushable trilby. It seems a little bit more modern. Maybe she would go for something like that.
Comment by Johnnie Bradley on January 27, 2012 at 10:36pm Luke, check out a Scalla Outback. It is similar to an Indiana Jones style hat, but felt. I wear one everyday, get tons of compliments on it. It's not the one I am wearing in my profile pic.
Comment by Hunter on January 27, 2012 at 10:17pm It just depends on the fedora. I also don a Stetson. The brim is more like a down turned fedora, but the crown is smaller. Look at a discussion called "Hat for trenchcoat" There is a picture of the Stetson I wear on it.
Comment by Luke Nierenhausen on January 27, 2012 at 9:33pm Thank you Hunter, A great Idea. Sadly after showing my Girl friend the Fedora, she was repulsed. Guess she's just not the old fashioned type...
Comment by Hunter on January 27, 2012 at 4:41pm Luke, try a Fedora. I personally like the crushable ones because you don't have to take as much care in where you put it and it shows age as you wear it. Just make sure that it is you wearing the hat, and not the hat wearing you.
Comment by Tim Hardy on January 27, 2012 at 4:23pm Glad to have found this discussion as I'm a big Hat nutter/fan and have been since childhood. My collection includes more than one of Trilby, Fedora, Panama, various straws, Akubra, Safari, half a dozen tweed caps and a plethora of others which include a vintage silk top hat in its original case but sadly too small for my big head (no brains in there though). I gather that it was made in French silk from a time when large heads were uncommon due to a lack of Frenchmen of stature due to their having been sent of to fight wars. Would like to know more on this. Show me a well made or interesing hat and I'm on it (or its on me)
