Interesting TED talk from the founder of Open Source Ecology. They are developing a "civilization starter kit." DIY hardware (tractors, brick press, plows). Great mission.

Levi, mix those parts with a basic erector set, and just about anything is possible.

My nephew is a little tinkerer and loves to build anything but doesnt know anything to build. he thinks he's outgrown his legos but he's only 5 (turning 6 in Aug.) He wants to build stuff with me but i don't know how i could entertain him without breaking my project. I gave him a little electrical set. with some wires and a little motor and switches but he doesn't know what to build with it. Any ideas?

I'd recommend the plastic molding they sell in the can to cover tool handles. It's the stuff you dip the tool handle in and then allow to set. If they aren't going to be chewing and swallowing it, it should be more than sufficient. If you need a wider way to apply it, I'd put it into a paint tray. Good luck.

I'm building a table for my nephews. I'm going to cover the top with flat lego pieces so they can build on it. I wanted to make some scenery out of chicken wire but I dont know what to use to cover the chicken wire. Any suggestions?

I just moved to a new Apartment at the beginning of November. There was a huge dining room table that was covered with the repairman's paint drips , and just dirty overall. My landlord assured me it would be out before we moved in, but I asked him to leave it.

As I sanded it down, I discovered it was someone old 'DIY' project table. It's made out of pine 2x4 and 2x6. I got it sanded down, and only have 1 more coat of nice green enamel to get on it before it's done.

It started as me just being cheap and reusing something that was still technically good, but it's ended as me bringing someone else's personal handiwork back to life, and I love it all the more for that.

Now I have to decide: Do i carry it with me when I move, or leave it for the next person? I know I could keep using it for many years, and I'm worried that the next people would just throw it out, but at the same time, it'd be a cool little legacy to leave there.
