What have you made recently? Anything useful? Fun? Necessary?

I love the feel of creating something with my own hands. Bonus if it's functional and beautiful, but that's hardly the point if I get down to it. I like the "doing" more than the "having done."

So show off a bit.

To start off - I lost my favorite ashtray to a pet accident (dog knocked it off the porch 4 flights, and it broke). So I made a new one over one lazy Saturday morning.

Ground out a small piece of 1/2" maple plywood to the shape I wanted, painted it black, then stapled a piece of 24ga copper sheet over it, and hammered the copper to shape. Total cost - $0 + 1.5 hours. Everything was scrap from my big box of shop supplies.

Simple, quick, functional and (I think) attractive. Should get a nice patina over time.

Nice.

Thanks Terry. Thought I owed it to my family's heritage as coppersmiths to give it a go. :)

That looks fantastic!

I had some scrap maple, and some 3/8ths all-thread (and copper pipe) laying around. So I mandel shaped the pipe to fit over lock nuts, and added a 3" PVC pipe and some craft foam to pad it (and flat black paint to class it up). And voila! A headphone stand for my office.

Sick of digging around in my pockets for what I need, I made a few leather dividers.

For my jacket pocket, to hold my tactical flashlight and my cell phone. And for my back pocket, to hold a penknife and business cards.

New Poems

A Poem by some one that I knowTake nothing lightlyBy Bjorn FaknamTake nothing lightly. No vain promise give. Hold your honor tightly, In the one life we live.Do not throw trust away, Whether in you or from you. Live up to it today, In everything you do.Look with respect. Follow honor to the letter. Use the courtesy you expect. Nay, treat them better. No matter what gifts you were given, You are never above yourself. By whatever cause you are driven, Put yourself on the back shelf. Those around…See More
