Duke played it two ways: First, he played himself, said he did not actually "act". Second, he played characters that had something of himself in them, or characters that he wanted to be. Not always, of course. But he did not play a psycho slasher or some character that you did not want your kids to see.

When you read about John Wayne's real life you realize he was just a man, but a man who tried to live his life with the values that his on screen persona displayed. He did so with a great deal of success. A great man and a great example even today.
