Today my wife and I saw The Hobbit. My wife doesn't handle 3D so well, so we had to skip the new 3D HFR showing. Instead, we opted for the only screen in the state (and the Intermountain area, I believe) with the new Dolby Atmos audio system. With Atmos, speakers line both sides and back wall, probably 2-3 times the usual number of them. In addition, two rows of speakers on the ceiling, front to back. The result is VERY impressive. Sounds can now be precisely placed.

So far, I'm aware of The Life of Pi and The Hobbit being released in Atmos. The new Star Trek movie will be as well.

Here's the info for those interested. It also lists the various theatres worldwide equipped now.

I'm fully expect the Megaplex chain here to equip their IMAX theaters soon. That will be something!
