I recently watched Brave - a computer animated Pixar movie distributed through Disney.
Beautiful music score. Beautiful animation. The voice artists were excellent in their performances. Great fairy-tale story. Complex - adult and childlike at the same time. Emotionally evocative - even though animated, the voices and the excellent animation blending, could really captivate children of all ages. Written in a fresh style with finely nuanced humor, I didn't realise the film went by so quickly. I enjoyed, and was captivated for, every minute of the film.
Surprising depth with this story, nuanced and a recognisable thread throughout, written simultaneously for two levels of audience. It feels fresh and the animated visuals are outstanding. Might be a tad too intense for smaller children - the action can be a little intense - even had the hairs on my scalp rising up, at points. Some of the visuals were actually quite stunning. The fish swimming in the clear stream - for animation - amazing. The drinking from the waterfalls. The beautiful fur of the bear charactor - looked like you could reach out and run your hand over the sleek fur.
My enjoyment of this animated film surprised me quite a bit. Not being a film critic, I feel my discourse regarding this film to be uneven and amatuer, but I can tell you how impressed I was with this production. Even as a 55 y/o man, the child within was involved and absorbed in this story and world.
I find the best films to be, when I stop analysing production, and realise I've become involved. This was one of those films. Great film for children - or those individuals who still are still in touch wiht the child that lives inside all of us!
Great job Pixar!
