Emergency Management-Disaster Preparedness

Information

Emergency Management-Disaster Preparedness

As a man I want to do the best to protect my family in the event of a disaster. This group is for the men who wants to be prepared for all hazards to insure his family can make it through the storm. This forum is to discuss anything, from the four phases of Emergency Management-Mitigation, Preparedness, Response, and Recovery, and to discuss the future of Emergency Management. If anyone works in Emergency Management, or is a first responder, or if you just want to discuss how to be better prepared. Any ideas and input is welcome.

Here's a CERT YouTube Video I thought was worth sharing. Pretty realistic, except we didn't have the luxury of a search dog when our group went through it. Great video anyway.…Continue

Both Red Cross and American Heart Association charge an admin fee for CPR certifications. When I lived in Tacoma they had 1 Sunday/year (CPR Sunday) where the fire department certified a few hundred people for free. You can check if something like that is available in your area.

Power out.  Used my cellphone to find candles and matches.  Used the candles to find the flashlights.  Dropped a battery getting a new flashlight up and running.  It's a good wake-up call as we head into El Nino.

I started Mensa's emergency preparedness SIG (Special Interest Group), Preparation M, several years ago. Their facebook group is open to anyone.

Thoughts on barterables?

One school of thought is to cache' barter goods just in case of a disaster.  Cigarettes, alcohol, coffee, even sodas and candy.  Even in a short term situation (under 10 days) there are likely to be less prepared people will to trade all sorts of things that you did not anticipate wanting for these "vices."

Since we still tend to use staticy radios or, when we're lucky, one bar of cell phone the trusty-rusty Phonetic Alphabet is worth learning.

"Not what I meant. I'm sure you thought you were being light hearted, it is just that from my own experience of being your age and being in situations with others your age, the light hearted isn't as light as we thought we were being. Hell,…"

Tim replied to Christopher Everet's discussion How do you handle just being friends with your crush?
"Great advice, Todd. Christopher, just plan the next couple moves once you know either way so you're prepared for the answer."

Todd McFarland replied to Christopher Everet's discussion How do you handle just being friends with your crush?
"The answer is simple. If you haven't already, make your feelings for her clear.  You don't want to walk away without knowing for sure that you are in the friend zone. If she puts you in the friend zone, forget about her and move on.…"

Todd McFarland replied to George Corbul's discussion How does one become a 'real' man exactly?
"Agreed that women's ideas vary widely, which means there are women for who like whatever type of man you want to be.   Don't let any woman define what a real man is for you.  That's ass-backwards."

Jesse Dean replied to Jesse Dean's discussion What Would You Do?
"What? It was light hearted. I don't think I can learn how to read people's minds and tell if their dad is the coach of the team. But thank you. Maybe they aren't that helpful."
