Introducing myself, I became an Eagle in 1980.  Troop 8 in Hinsdale, IL.  Currently I have two sons:  a 10 year old webelo and a 12 year old tenderfoot and I enjoy being a den leader.

Yesterday the Boy Scouts of America’s National Executive Board voted to end the BSA’s decades-old ban on gay adults and employees.  Now each unit or troop will determine their own policies and guidelines regarding openly gay leaders.  In addition, removed members are allowed to rejoin the organization and employment discrimination based on sexual orientation is eliminated.  The ban on atheist and agnostic leaders remains.

What does this mean for me personally?  As a scout leader, I am glad that our pack and troop can welcome Scouts’ gay parents without risking losing our charter.  Regarding atheists and agnostics, a “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy remains in reality.  Systemic discrimination is still tolerated and supported, and to me this is against the Scout Law of being loyal, courteous, kind and reverent.

At the end of the day, I still won’t buy popcorn to support BSA at the council or national level, but prefer to write a check to the pack or troop to support non-discriminatory scouting at the local level.

I was one of the first two Eagles our troop had in about 12 years.

Can't remember the exact date I was given my Eagle Scout.  ~2000, Trapper Trails Council I think.

I knew there would be some fellow eagles on here. Glad to see there is a presence.

I reaffirm my allegiance to the three promises of the Scout Oath.

I thoughtfully recognize and take upon myself the obligations and responsibilities of an Eagle Scout. On my honor, I will do my best to make my training an example and my status and my influence count strongly for better Scouting and for better citizenship in my troop, in my community, and in my contacts with other people.

To this I pledge my sacred honor.

How many of you guys are active in scouting today?  If so, how do feel about the overall direction of scouting?
