It seems as though I come up with a new design for a dream house just about every week. What I can never decide though is if I would prefer being in a small to mid-sized community or isolated a…Continue

My dream house would be overlooking a lake, with good hunting or shooting around it.

Wow, Hennie!  That is really great.  You are so fortunate to be able to live in the country in such a great house.  There are similar hidden treasures here in the States.  Unfortunately, so many of us can't swing the logistics to make the move.  I wish you all the best in your dream house.

When we moved to Germany 3 years ago, I almost thought we would never be able to afford a decent home, let alone a dream home... One day - about 2.5 years ago, we travelled to a really nice valley in the country side - and saw an old mansion build in historic German Forsthaus style - with a German "Backhaus" next to it.. surrounded by forest. I told my wife - "Wow - look at that! I would love to own something like that one day!" What really spoke to me was the surroundings - the forest, the playground for the children, and the remoteness of it all - and obviously the big old house... To make a long story short... the house came in the market last year.. we never thought we could afford it... but somehow managed (as it is in the country side it is much cheaper than it would have been close to a city). Today we actually live in the house I once dreamed of owning... I cannot believe we are actually so blessed... Some part of it probably has to do with seeking until you find it...!

All I need is a Timber frame on a lake with 20 of my own acres and I will take care of the rest.

Actually, none of the above. I got an undergraduate degree in architecture and, in the process, discovered how boring Modern architecture is and how interesting historic architecture is.  I then got a graduate degree in historic preservation.  As a result, I do the professional investigation and coordination of the work.

Interesting.  Historic preservation - how did you get involved in it?  Are you more contractor, craftsman, historian, or civil engineer?

No, I don't work in real estate. I am an architectural conservator and my work is to restore and preserve historic buildings. I have had all kinds of great projects.

That house really looks great and would be a steal here at $195k.

This place is 5,000 sq ft, 6BR 3BA.  $195k in a city where I think you could easily find work enough to pay the mortgage.

Do you work in Real Estate?  Sounds like you've had some fun projects.

There are some great bargains in small towns. Missouri has some really nice houses at really low prices. The problem is that you have to be independently wealthy to afford to live in these towns, plus everyone in town knows you, which is not always a good thing.

I have helped at least two of my clients create their dream houses. One is a small, English-style cottage in a wonderful jungle of a yard in the middle of town and the other is a grand antebellum mansion overlooking the Mississippi River. They could hardly be more different from each other, but I love them both.

I used to want a very elaborate home.  But now a days I dream of a tiny place in the mountains of Tennessee.  Though recently on vacation, I saw a remodeled 120 year old plantation house for sale in the middle of a sleepy southern city for less than my modest house up north.  I'd like to have a place like that for a few years.
