Since there's been no activity for over a year, I've decided to try and start things up again.

What are some of your favorite non-fiction books on the war?

My favorites include:

The Horrid Pit by Alan Axelrod

Battle Cry of Freedom by James B. McPherson

For Cause and Comrades by James B. McPherson

This Republic of Suffering by Drew Gilpin Faust

Civil War Medicine: Challenges and Triumphs by Alfred Bollet

The Rifle Musket in Civil War Combat by Earl Hess

Stillness at Appomattox by Bruce Catton

I have a great biography on Stonewall Jackson. A book on arms and equipment that is pretty cool. And the entire Time-Life set on the Civil War. A Gettysberg book that takes you through the entire battle hour by hour over the entire 3 days plus Lees retreat.... BTW today is the anniversary of Sharpsburg if your Southern... Antitiem to you Yankees.... The bloodiest day ever in America....

And I would know. I was at Antietam yesterday during the 150th anniversary commemoration.

Re: Antietam, you guys beat me to it!

Some of my favorites:

Life and Campaigns of Stonewall Jackson, by Robert Lewis Dabney

Lee's Real Plan at Gettysburg, by Troy D. Harman

From Manassas To Appomattox, by James Longstreet

Hard Tack and Coffee: Soldier's Life in the Civil War, by John D. Billings

The Civil War Battlefield Guide, Second Edition

The Civil War Almanac, by John S. Bowman

With Lee in Virginia, by G.A. Henty

I have long wanted to read This Republic of Suffering but haven't yet got to it. Might as well add Team of Rivals, with the Lincoln movie being based on it, though I hear it's quite the epic at some 800 pages or something!
