I have been a Christian for some years now, and have alway been near to those in the Roman Catholic Denomination. However, for the life of me, I can't figure out certain things that go on within the Church. I was hoping some of you could share your insight into these matters.
1.) Why pray to Saints?
2.) Why idolize Mary?
3.) What is the purpose of the Papacy, and how come the Pope is seen as infallable?
4.) "Add your own question"
I am really looking for some good answers, and not a flame war. If anyone feels the need, do it elsewhere. However, lively discussion is encouraged for the sake of sharpening each other in our Faith.

1640 Ireland.
I do not nor would not ever claim to be the "final arbiter" for what the Bible says... I will allow the Textus Receptus & the Majority Text do that
BWAHAHAHAHA

Permalink Reply by Bryan Maloney on April 12, 2012 at 11:01am Baptists were not universally anti-slavery. This is how the Southern Baptist Convention came about, after all. I am not claiming that Baptists are still supporting the atrocity of slavery today, just historically.
however, in the modern day, many a Baptist wishes to abolish separation of church and state, as my own direct experience can attest. I also know from direct experience that there are Baptists who would not shed a tear were freedom of religion repealed.
If you are going to tar the Catholics with a broad brush, then you must apply equally as broad a brush to the Baptists and stop complaining about others using broad brushes--or is hypocrisy a Christian virute?

I never claimed they were...

I am sure there are that do...

As I said before, Catholicism is not monolithic, even if they all recognize the Romish Pope... The Catholics in Mexico have different beliefs and customs than the Catholics in Ireland or anywhere else for that matter... There are Liberation Theology Catholics, Opus Dei, etc who have radically differing views on what it means to be a Catholic... I don't paint with a broad brush by explaining the Babylonian Mystery Cult origins of the Roman Catholic System... how their religion manifests itself today in its diversity is not the same issue...
It seems that it is you who is complaining about my analysis of their religion and its daughter churches, and if you want to point out the heresy & hypocrisy within the Baptist communities today, I would likely agree with you... This is why I am Independent Baptist, so that I am not under the yoke of some Institution or bear the burden of what other congregations do in the name of Christ... If you want to criticize the beliefs and practices of my own local assembly, or of myself for that matter, I would welcome the feedback...

I am not trying to convince Shane or Liam or anyone else to think like me...
They have likely chosen whom this day they serve, and are not my intended audience...
We are just actors on a stage who get to write our own lines...
By juxtaposing different world views of Truth, other folks who will read this get the benefit of seeing how we represent our respective ontology and how we treat others...
Can they reason through the topic of discussion without resorting to logical fallacies?
If shown the weakness in their argument or the flaws in their world view, do they allow their feelings to get hurt or resort to ad hominem attacks? Or just change the subject?
Or when presented with information that exposes the inherent contradictions in their thinking process, will they challenge their own assumptions and the premises that they base their world view upon, and seek to develop their critical thinking skills further...?
I'm guessing that this post is employing the royal (plural majestatis) "they."
Permalink Reply by Elliott Jason Ridgway on April 11, 2012 at 1:30am Yeah... I should have used the inclusive plural pronouns "We" and "Our", or the indefinite "one" or "one's"... thanks for the correction... this applies to me as much as anyone else...
