I'm not a Catholic, but I hear many Christians say Catholics (most, not all, depending on their specific beliefs) are not really Christian, and that they go to hell. I really don't have a big opinion on the matter though.
Any opinions on this?

Permalink Reply by Stephen on May 22, 2012 at 8:13pm I hadn't heard this before. I imagine the kind of person who says that every single Catholic is going straight to Hell is the kind of person who also says that quite a lot of other people are going to Hell too and you really just have to avoid making eye contact with them on the bus.
Permalink Reply by Jack Bauer on May 22, 2012 at 8:36pm I haven't heard that from "many Christians". A few, maybe.
I believe this is the meaning of "judge not lest ye be judged". We are called to judge actions, doctrine, etc. We are not called to judge Salvation. I don't decide who is, and is not, a Christian. I don't know who's going to hell ... and it isn't my decision to make.
I can argue about doctrine, disagree with beliefs, and debate actions. I can recognize sin, false doctrine, etc. I believe there are certain essential beliefs of the Christian faith -- and that belief in them can contribute to your Salvation. Catholics seem to hit most, if not all, of them.
But, I won't argue about someone else's Salvation. It ain't my call. I believe Catholics are wrong about some things. People can be wrong and still be Christian. I'm sure we're all wrong about something. That's why its called "Grace".

Permalink Reply by John Muir on May 22, 2012 at 9:10pm I would venture to say that head-count wise, there are more Christians in the RCC than any other denomination
Permalink Reply by Stephen on May 23, 2012 at 5:22am Easily, the Catholic church is something like a billion strong.

Huh? What do they have to do with religion other than they don't believe in God? If you're Catholic and by that I mean you pray, go to church etc. you believe in God so therefore you're not atheist.
