Presuming that you had the opportunity to travel on this venture or another program to colonize Mars and that it was not only dangerous but almost certainly a one way trip with no possibility of return, would you go?

We still don't have shielding capable of keeping the space craft's occupants alive through a solar 'storm'. And that's only one problem. Think about 6 months trapped in a small 'boat' with however many other people with not much to do except 'pass the time'. You can't exactly 'get out for a breathe of fresh air' can you?

Permalink Reply by Glendale Eugene on January 29, 2013 at 12:14am A few years ago, I read that scientists speculated that Mars could be made habitable for earth creatures using the day's technologies in about 500 years. And the thinking followed that the more effort put towards that goal, the faster technology would gain and knock up to 400 years off that span.
Well I don't think enough effort has been put forth yet to reduce it much. But, the need for another planet to help sustain Human kind might become the driving factor.
Throughout history, we have most often succeeded when the need out weighed the want.
So, I'd go in a New York Minute if my efforts alone meant continued life, liberty, and happiness for my posterity and theirs. I believe that most would/will pioneer that great frontier in that light.

Permalink Reply by Eric P. on February 7, 2013 at 4:33pm Yes. I am young and so in that time I will be 28. Hopefully I will have made some money and would be able to go.
I would be apart of human history, I would become one of the first hand full of people to colonize a different planet. This has been my dream since I was 7. I would do this 100%
Permalink Reply by Caleb Herring on February 19, 2013 at 4:29pm I think I would do it. Christopher Columbus of Space (minus the murder of the native people)? Leif Eriksson, perhaps... That sounds extremely cool. Plus, I'll be the perfect age at that time.
