I've been taking Karate with my 5 year old for about two months now.  I want to get back into the gym after my hiatus but with the Karate schedule it is difficult to do and keep up with house-work.  I think I'm going to have to go to the gym early in the morning, which I've tried before but sleep keeps beckoning.

What hours do you guys go to the gym and how did you get your body used to that schedule?

When I was working up for my current deployment I was doing three-a-days, cardio in the morning, weights at night and distance running at noon.  It's a schedule, one your body won't let you do for very long, but it's possible, just need to set your mind to it.

Ah, youth.

Youth hell.  It needed to get done, so I got it done.  I will say this, I was working out at home, so that cut down on "gym time" quite a bit and I could move my schedule around some to accommodate life.

Yes, life follows what is Necessary.

For me it's breakfasts in the morning, dinner at night and gym at noon. It's a schedule I can keep indefinitely!

I prefer to get my workouts done in the morning before work. If you're not a morning person it may be a little harder to start a morning regimen, but not impossible. The key is to make it part of your daily routine. If you can force yourself to go regularly for as little as 6 weeks, it will become second nature.

I've heard morning workouts before breakfast (in a fasted state) are great for fat-burning.

For me it's just too early, I need at least one meal in me before I go; just can't have an effective workout on an empty tank of gas.

Alan,

I'm thinking that that's the only time I'll have available. As I stated I've tried it before but lack of sleep due to my schedule caught up with me. With a less hectic schedule, for now, I may be able to pull it off.

I go 3x a week. That's all my schedule permits.

I make it a full hour, locker room to locker room, at lunch. I find it's the ideal time to go as my energy levels are high, and at my age that's important. I found a gym very close to my office that makes it possible.

In the summer I add almost daily swimming to that, and for the rest of the year I leave to the partially active nature of my job, and dog walks on weekends.

My body does what I tell it to do, but I find if I work with it rather than against it I'm much happier and the results are better.

Weekday evenings and weekend afternoons, not as often as I'd like.

When I first started going, I was astounded that I was managing it. After all, isn't the cliche the person who signs up for a gym and never goes? Didn't I feel plenty busy before this new time commitment? Since there are only so many hours in the week, what had I dropped to pick up this new activity? Reading and cooking, though it took awhile to figure that out.

I am so incredibly not a morning person, I don't think I could ever routinely exercise in the morning. I also can't exercise well when I'm hungry. (for exercises involving concentration and balance) All that said, the standard advice for OP is:

1. Figure out how much sleep you need each night.

2. Go to bed that many hours before you need to get up.

3. Have everything all ready to head out the door first thing in the morning, before you go to bed - clothes laid out, gym bag stocked.

I write often about how housework went out the door when I started dating seriously. It took a long time, but basically I cut it in half, at least the heavy cleaning like vacuuming and scrubbing the tub. Haven't choked on dust bunnies yet.

On a separate note, how's it going with taking Karate with your kid?

It's going pretty well. He loves going but he does have attention span problems, what 5 year old doesn't, but he picks up the moves quickly. We'll test for our first belt in about a month (we may be able to test for two up but we'll see).

Is it a family package?
