Who Wears a Watch Anymore?
I saw this discussion regarding President Obama's wristwatch and my first thought was...who wears a watch anymore? With cellphones and other personal electronics being so ubiquitous it seems owning and wearing a watch are falling out of style. I myself own a couple but haven't worn them in years. Dead batters, bands that (ehem) are a big snug now, etc. Just doesn't seem worth the effort although I do miss wearing them.
What about you? Do you wear a watch? Is it merely a time keeper or a part of your dress? Different watches for different occasions? Any fantastic heirlooms floating around?

I wear one. My old one broke not too long ago, and I tried to go without, but I felt out of kilter without.
Bought a nice silver number, slim. Not too pricey, understated. I feel much better with it.

I do wear a watch for function, not fashion. It's too easy for me to leave my phone at home or in the truck.
It's a Timex Ironman Triathlon that I picked up 4 years (because my previous one wasn't rugged enough and busted up in a mountain bike wreck) ago at Walmart. I'm not a huge fan of the rubber band (because of it's thickness, the buckle digs into my wrist as I rest it on my desk typing), but it sure is tough as hell.

I always wear one. I have a couple different ones; one for wearing around the house and yard work (dented and dinged up), and another for work. Neither are name branded, as I've had horrible luck with nicer watches (theft, serious dents and dings, etc.). I tend to not have my cell phone with me at times due to the bulk, so my watch serves as my primary time keeper. I don't know if I could ever go without one, I feel truly "naked" without one.
You do bring up a good point, though. I'd be interested to see some stats on watch sales over the past X number of years to see the effects of the "digital age" on watches. I'd also be interested to see if there's anything detailing trends in types of watches sold (digital, calculator watches, name branded, etc)...

I hadn't thought about those in years until you just mentioned it! I had one that was a little Mario game I think. Got me thinking about this watch, actually. Combines both worlds, don't ya think? Of course, they also posted this article about the pitfalls.

Wow, that's watch has got some heft! I had actually never heard of these before seeing the articles. It's a really neat idea, but I have no doubt I'd smack it against one too many things and break it within a month. I bet they'll get the size down a lot, though, as technology progresses.

Here's an article on MSNBC referring to exactly what you were talking about. It does look like watch sales are down considerably and will probably decline further if you take into account how many teens are wearing them.

Thanks for passing this article along, Chris! I have to admit, I knew watches had lost ground, but I had no clue that only 1 in 10 teens wore a watch on a daily basis! I think it's also interesting that Rolex sales have remained stable; maybe that's the wave of the future, high dollar time pieces that are as much jewelry as they are a tool.

The digital age was good to watches. from 02-07 watch sales were awesome the best year being in 06 my first year in the business. A-lot of us in the industry expect the middle market to fall out leaving only the entry and the ridiculous left. We do not expect watches to be a big part of the business anymore. My first year in the business you just wrote the sale for a watch now you have to sell it REALLY sell it and the margins are not great so expect a lot of retailers to go super high end or stay reasonable that middle ground is not worth it anymore the pieces do not turn fast enough.
