Last night I was watching TV (which is not something I get a chance to do very often) and I noticed once again, as I'm sure many of you have noticed many times before, that most male characters on television are just plain unmanly. So I was wondering, do you think there are any manly television characters on the air these days, and, if so, who do you think is the manliest?

Off the top of my head, I can think of a few manly television characters: Leroy Jethro Gibbs and Tony DiNozzo from NCIS, Michael Weston and his buddy Sam Axe from Burn Notice, but my vote for the manliest character on television these days may surprise you....

It's Patrick Jane from the Mentalist. I find him to be the manliest mostly because he uses his street smarts and practical intelligence to get to the truth; he gathers facts through keen observation, and "reads" people's faces and body language to discover their true motive. Even though I know that there are plenty of other characters currently on television who do the pretty much the same thing, I like the approach with Patrick Jane, because there is something particularly manly about the way he goes the about what he does with a calm confidence and self-assuredness that doesn't exist in the character's of other shows.

What do you think?

Hands down Don Draper from Mad Men

Mr. Bates from Downton Abbey

I see it.

Ron Swanson

Correct.

Absolutely. He makes that show in my opinion.

I'd have to say Elliot from leverage, he's the only one that was never a criminal, yet he's willing to break the law to provide for those that can't. He's humble when it comes to his duty as the hitter and he knows what it means to protect those that can't protect themselves. Other than that id probably agree with mike weston and patrick jane.

I like Michael Weston, though sometimes Fiona is the better man!

My vote is for Tom Mason (Falling Skies) with Mr. John Reese (Person Of Interest) a close second.  The reason I like Mason is because he isn't some former-agent-something-or-other-super-hero type. He is just a guy in a bad situation who is stepping up, doing the best he can for his family and country.

Mason is a good choice for current shows. The manliest man on TV though was from a series back in the days of the first Jimmy Carter administration.

A Poem by some one that I knowTake nothing lightlyBy Bjorn FaknamTake nothing lightly. No vain promise give. Hold your honor tightly, In the one life we live.Do not throw trust away, Whether in you or from you. Live up to it today, In everything you do.Look with respect. Follow honor to the letter. Use the courtesy you expect. Nay, treat them better. No matter what gifts you were given, You are never above yourself. By whatever cause you are driven, Put yourself on the back shelf. Those around…See More
