A suit. DC in May will probably already be humid, but it shouldnt' be too bad in the morning. Just have something setup to where you can change afterwards to do all the awesome sight seeing.

If I recall, the Capitol Dining Room does require a jacket. Can't go wrong with a suit.

I agree with others.  Go with a nice suit.  It would also be prudent to brush up on your table manors if you're feeling rusty.

Not a bad idea, but also, don't be stiff. The CDR isn't as intimidating as you might think. In fact, I found the food in the Longworth Cafeteria to be superior. Enjoy the conversation.

Can't go wrong with a suit. I'd go with blue if you have the option. And polish your shoes.

+1 to polishing your shoes.  No one but a drill sergeant will notice that you did polish your shoes but everyone will notice if you do not. 

Some sort of appropriate and memorable tie tack/bar.  A French cuffed shirt can also be comfortable in the morning and an opportunity to show off similar cuff links.  What sorts of history are you into?

I have a general interest in US History. I was a History major in college (even though I am a social worker professionally). I also do my best to keep up with National politics. I am finding it harder to be interested in this as of late due to the contentiousness of that realm.

However, in spite of all that I am excited to be able to meet my Congressman. he has represented us for a long time and is pretty genuine about doing his best for us.

Are you a member of Sons of the Revolution, Sons of the Union, Phi Alpha Theta, or other such history fraternities?  If so, their tie tack or lapel pin might be a nice choice. 

A Battle of Monmouth lapel pin?

I love the tie bar.  Quite a few of our elected "representatives" would react hysterically, I'm sure.

 

Hate the french cuffs with the wristwatch, though.

You have great parents; what a cool, cool gift!!

If you don't own one already, get as good a mid-season fabric suit as you guys can afford, especially if you have leveled off on your growth. It will come in handy later as an interview suit.

Go for a conservative cut; you can always add a bit of dash with accessories such as ties and such.

The weather will be a crap shoot at that time of year, so a midseason fabric (neither summer nor winter weight) will cover it. If you can't afford a suit, drop your bucks on a tailored, classic blue blazer and wear tailored, pressed chinos. It's a preppy, classic look that is always appropriate.

Thanks for the input!! I was thinking a suit as well. My concner is the weather since it tends to be humid and I sweat copiously when that is the case.

Have any of you ever dined in the CDR? If so, what is it like?

I am pretty excited about this opportunity!
