Imagine your in a foggy feild with your fellow knights waiting for battel. Your muscles tighten and your focus narrows. A blast from a horn commands a charge. You grab your weapon which happens to be your trusty what is it acctualy? My questoin is if you were a medeval knight what weapon would you want to carry and why. By the way you only get one.

Am I mounted on a horse?

Does a shield count as a weapon, or can you have it in one hand "for free?"

Are my opponents armored or mostly unarmored?

A bow. Preferably one I can shoot while cowering behind a buttress. In the next town.

A crossbow.

Same effective range as a wheellock musket of the period.

No smoke or flash to comprise my posistion.

I don't have to charge anyone with it.

Reloads quicker than a musket.

Easier to aim and fire than a longbow.

Penetrates knights armor.

OTOH, the reloading time for those period crossbows is a bugger.  Especially when faced with charging cavalry or a cloud of cloth yard long arrows.

BTW, that's why the early hand cannoneers and firelock-wielding musketeers were paired with pikemen.

You can be mounted or unmounted and you may have a sheild if your weapon allows.

I'm afraid you can't really put wheellocks into the medieval period.

Considering my heritage and build I would probably have wielded a longsword.

From what my name implies I come from a semi-rich (not noble) Frisian family dating back (at least) to the 1300's. Traditionally we're pretty tall. Someone of that social stature wields a longsword. Generally it's just walking around with a giant penis in your hands to show how manly you are. My height would make sure that I could actually use it.

It's nice to think about it. As a Frisian, I would be seated on a Friesian pure-blood, one of the biggest horses in the world. Imagine a 6'3'' blond bearded idiot swinging a longsword while being seated on a gigantic broadchested beast as black as the night, using the attached picture for a shield. It's definitely an image I can live with.

Footman's Hammer. Since the swords of the period were more for bludgeoning than cutting, why not go straight to the Crusher?

A hammer is indeed a FINE tool of the ages. Ridiculously effective, either bludgeoning the head, or penetrating the neck/armpit parts or even weak armor. Bludgeoning knees on horse riders is also a very good one. Really good in tight spots, not so much of a horse.

Relatively light and small, it's a very good back up weapon for people like me who have to carry around a giant phallus for appearance sake.

I very much agree.

Since gunpowder was invented in the Middle Ages, I would choose a gun.

Mounted, with shield and war hammer.  I might bring my sword with me as a backup and for the sake of appearances but really, the hammer was where it was at.

I normally don't reply to this sort of hypothetical post, but the English Longbow pretty much tore the (bleep) out of the French mounted nobility twice....Crecy & Agincourt (the bodkin point punches through plate armor and chain mail quite well).  Then there's always the Swiss pike.  Which was used with great effect against the French mounted knights in the 14th Century.

And for the quibblers, there's a fairish amount of documentation for all three events.
