So I'm reading the newspaper once I get settled-in at work, and it had this article about teen girls facing a new type of dating abuse (not relevent to the post, but the article was about stalking text messages and boyfriends forcing them to "sext") And my first thought is, why are teenage girls facing so much dating abuse nowadays....I remember a news article awhile back where a School Resource Officer was talking about dating violence and sexual violence to kid's in 5th grade...And there were kids in 5th and 6th grade who had already experienced dating violence!
Now, I'm 22, so I don't know about decades past, but I've got a lot of friends and co-workers from The Greatest Generation and Generation X--male and female--and I've never heard any stories from them about dating violence when they were in their teens....Is the current generation really this fucked-up and raised this badly that at whatever age they are in 5th & 6th grade that they think abusing your girlfriend is okay?
I'm not going to blame the media--although the media does seem to portray DV as normal and acceptable--because any child raised right would have it in him to realize that what he's seeing on TV or on the internet is bullshit...So I'm going to shoot the blame to the parents and older siblings: Children see their fathers smacking their mother around, girls see their mothers taking the beating and not doing fuckall about it, thy see it from their sisters and brothers' relationships....
If the world is getting to a point where little punkass kids in 5th and 6th grade are starting to lay hands on females and thinking it's alright, and the females think it's acceptable.....Stop the world and let my pink Scottish ass off....
That is pretty scary stuff man. I have a 22 month old daughter and another girl on the way in November and hearing stuff like this often makes me know I have my hands full in the future. In talking with other Dads and parents it always comes down to teaching your kids the rights and wrongs and that they can come to you with anything. We know that we cannot always be there and so this is the best way possible.
Teach your girls to A) not lie to you, and B) not let anyone talk them into doing anything they don't want to do. Anyone who tells you they were forced to sext is either lying or is of a weak mind. Anyone who believes that story is an idiot. Possibly with an agenda.
I would change possibly to probably....
I haven't read the whole thread, but I have to ask: WTF are 5th and 6th grade girls (or boys) doing DATING in the first place??? It's hard to build anything but wacky on a foundation of wacky.
You said it all at the top of your post J.D. We truly have thrown out all codes of Morality, Ethics & Decency.
Spot on JD!!! Excellent response.
I'd like to offer some more food for thought:
I'm in my sixties now. My parents thought that Elvis Presley with his lascivious hip swiveling was Sodom and Gomorrah returned. Ducktails, greased back hair, leather jackets and rock and roll were obscene and evidence of the devil. In the 1920's - my grandparents' time - flappers were all tramps and loose women and the temperance union was on God's mission to restore purity. Speakeasies were evidence the earth had succumbed to Satan and may not recover.
In short, virtually every generation thinks the new generation to be on the pathway to hell or, at the very least, not up to the standards of the prior generation.
Those of us who are parents are the one's who make a difference. If we screw it up, we've no one to blame but ourselves.
Good point, Andrew D. I keep hearing people talking about how the rise of whatever philosophical/ethical fad is popular at the moment has caused/is causing an irreparable down spiral in society, and that, if only we could return to a golden age of "absolute morality", religiosity, or whatever, we'd have an orderly paradise on earth.
I'd like to remind people that, while the notion of moral relativism as a popular phenomenon may be new, practices such as human slavery, brutality, war, organized discrimination based on race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, etc, child marriage, regarding women as chattels and property, ... were the norm during that "golden age" of absolute morality.
I see a lot of nostalgia for the world of the 1950s, as depicted in TV sitcoms like Father Knows Best and Leave it to Beaver. As someone who lived through those years, I can bear witness to the fact that that world never existed. In most respects, we're much better off now than we were then.
I can't see parents allowing 5th and 6th graders to date. But - our parents didn't "allow" it, and we did it anyway - hormones will be hormones. We probably did a lot of other stupid things as well. All in all, it's probably not as bad as the days when those 5th and 6th grade girls were being married off to men 4 times their age, and more than half of them died in childbirth in their early teens ...

You mean like last week?
Yeah, exactly. I don't think that anyone would say the Yemeni have "relativistic morality". Their code is pretty absolute, IIRC.
I'll stick with what we have here now, thanks. ;)
I disagree with you, Dino. My parents lived through that era and many of their friends. They attest that the world was indeed like that portrayed in the movies and television shows of the era. People respected each other and property. They dressed decently, had high work and academic ethics, etc. It is ridiculous to say our society is better off now than it was then. Yes, sin has always existed and they had their problems but the Standard was Biblical truths that were the basis of our laws and the founding of our nation. For instance, prior to 1963, the Supreme Court always quoted a scripture and ruled on precedence. However, that year the case of leaving the Bible in public schools came up. They ruled against and, for the first time in our nation's history, the court did not rule on precedence nor quoted scripture. That started the ball rolling on the decay of our society. Without a Standard, everyone does what is right in their own eyes. The USSR included in their plan to destroy the US the goal of removing the moral and ethical foundation of our country. Low and behold, that is continuing to be done to our detriment.
